Agreed. I'm still hoping for e-ink monitors. I'd be willing to shell out decent money for a large e-ink screen. It'd need color and would have to be faster than current screens. For writing and for reading mostly-text webpages, I think t

Maybe not entirely on-topic, but I'm very willing to pay a dollar or three for a book in the public domain that hasn't had the Project Gutenberg treatment.

Duh, just read a few paragraphs up: "[funds] could soon be relocating ... to defy the laws of physics". It's pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain that if they can defy the laws of physics, selling stocks at 90% of the speed of light

We need common sense & neutral specialists in control. This world is clearly becoming far too complex for the electable caste. How do you reconcile those two sentences? As I read them, they directly contradict each other, even if by

Agreed. Polls like this one don't work well for orthogonal ranges, and here there are at least two: how well you know C (from knowing nothing to being a master) and how often you use it (never [anymore, if you happen to know it well] to it

Hmm... I suppose so. However, selling drugs has two salient points that, I think, make it unique: it is lucrative and it shouldn't be illegal. I might put prostitution in this category, but I'm not sure how profitable it really is. I unde

Indeed. And also consider the opportunity cost here: all the drive, creativity, and talent that is going into making subs (in just this case; the incentives are such that drug dealers high on the food chain surely do a lot of interesting,

Agreed. It's a childish attitude, to say the least. Still, the idea an informal insurance fund to pay fare evasion fines is interesting -- this is why I posted it.

I don't think you can generalize much about a group of three hundred million people. If you accept that premise, then there just isn't very far you can go when talking about a country's honor or morality. The people calling the shots in a

There are more than a billion people living in India. I don't think you can say much about them collectively, aside from obvious banalities.

Mistake one: thinking its his country. It is not. Mistake two: the idea of a country's honor is ludicrous. I'm with him, otherwise, although I don't think the case is as clear-cut as I used to.

Interesting question. I think there are some. Does N hz "sound like" N*2 hz and N/2 hz across cultures? I expect the answer is yes, but I don't really know. Have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A13_QGMtlRE . I think Bobby McF

I agree that reproducibility is very important, and it's worth going out of your way get it. On the other hand, it's not entirely clear that you should include all that stuff inside a source control repository. This is something I've grapp

I agree that many developers on Macs aren't traditional Mac users, but disagree that OSX is a better Unix. I'd say it's an ok-to-good Unix, but one where sound, copy and paste, and wireless networking all work--and that it's these that com

It wasn't github. It was the fact that, at first blush, Noisy seemed to fail the actually-does-something test. It turned out not to be so, but it did take me a lot of control wiggling to figure out what was going on.

Reading a book you've already read is definitely a good idea. Seeing the grammatical forms you might have heard, and even tried to use, written out (and well-edited!) was for me immensely helpful. It also helps that you already know what h

Pretty sure the GP is referring to pattern matching as it exists in ML or Scala. Or, somewhat less elegantly (given the constraints of the language) something like what https://github.com/jfd/match-js does.
