This exactly. I don’t believe the government should be censoring porn, but I have a really hard time arguing that principle against studies that suggest it is normalizing choking and slapping women among the young men exposed to it. Why is

I’d hope that average American doesn’t care about jobs they aren’t qualified for being filled by people paying taxes into their communities.

Still undesirable latency for a lot of compute use cases, like image or video editing; it’s really only negligible for LLMs. Since that’s definitely a big enough use case all on its own, I wonder if such a product should really just double

Like gravity, there is some inexorably force drawing the state towards mass surveillance tools as it makes the job easier. Removing friction that fights against that force is real

Seems like a slippery slope. Now the infrastructure is there to ask apple, Google and microsoft to confirm identity with selfies over the internet.

I think cli’s are more token efficient- the help menu is loaded only when needed, and the output is trivially pipe able to grep or jq to filter out what the model actually wants

There were a bunch of intel atom ones IIRC. I got my degree with a used EEEpc with one of those.

So you’re telling me we could do this all for just a few million dollars more than the price of the three fighter jets recently shot down over Kuwait, and provide good American jobs while doing so? Sounds like a deal. (In reality it would b

This analysis is predicated on a few things- that the estimates in the article are accurate, that 1 in 10,000 assumes that the process of deporting the 10,000 was the same that detained those Americans and not in addition to those deportati

Not what the article is talking about, but I think betting against x86 in terms of the investment of companies (not individuals buying PC parts) has been a pretty good bet! Being long AAPL and NVDA has crushed AMD and INTC, and that's

When you were detained it was in service of understanding an accident. When these Americans are detained it’s because they were racially profiled. The courts may decide that’s due process now but they didn’t believe so years ago and there i

I feel like we would disagree on the role of immigration in the US but I really appreciate you calling out how the current administration’s approach is only effective at making viral clips online. Meta comment, but it’s refreshing to talk w

Not OP but I guess it’s where the threat model includes worrying about the foreign government actors. Like US infrastructure, government contracting or some major tech companies.

I’ve also changed my mind because of HN and other technical forum discussions. I brought up the counter example at the workplace because it is a case the article mentions without argument. I think it’s ridiculous to pretend there isn’t mass

Is this really a driving factor for people? If I anticipate tasks that I can't wait to get back to a good work environment to do, I'll bring my laptop and tether on my phone. It's a fantastically more productive setup than tr

This article asserts a lot without backing it up. I've been convinced to take political actions as the result of thoughtful discussions with coworkers over lunch for example; even if that's rare acting like it's impossible ig

If the task can’t be done in a few taps I feel I’m better off opening a laptop anyways. However the market agrees with you so I must be missing something. I used to think it was driven by media consumption on phones, and that I try to avoid

I think the warfighters are a distraction, a system could trivially say that there is a human in the loop for LLM-derived kill lists. My money is that the mass domestic surveillance is the true sticking point, because it’s exactly what you

Models will always struggle with this specific task without tool use, because of the way they tokenize things. I think a bit of prompt engineering, asking it to spell out each work or giving it the ability to run a “contains e” python funct

This could kill the golden goose. There is a strong argument to be made that Anthropic has a leading model because of the principled people who built it, and I don’t see how they won’t leave, like many did to go to Anthropic from OpenAI and

Legally no, but in practice the president has been trying to assert the power to unilaterally levy taxes, even in spite of the supreme court ruling that you need the legislature to pass a tax. People still paid the tariffs. I would be extre

The government is slowly waking up to how important chips are and how far behind domestic sources have fallen from foreign (mostly Chinese and Taiwanese) sources. That's what the 2022 CHIPS act was about. These things just take a lot o
