We should get rid of at least pennies and nickels (both of which cost more to make than they are worth.) The last time the US phased out a denomination -- the half-cent piece in 1857 -- it had more purchasing power than a dime does today. B

When I saw the new price point, I actually briefly considered buying a $139 model so I could loan the whole Kindle (and my whole electronic library) to a friend... Then again, I bought a paperback book yesterday specifically because I knew

I completely agree with you. Unfortunately, sometimes when I'm checking in at US airline kiosks, a "helpful" attendant will come over and start operating the kiosk for me. I can't stand that -- it's the worst of both solutions. For example,

Another anecdote: I moved to the city in late March. Since then, I've been in five sublets while I looked for a suitable permanent place to live. (Moving in tomorrow!) One of those sublets would have been legal under this new law. The first

I haven't downvoted you, but would like to point out that there is a very large middle ground for disagreement without taking the absurd position of "you wouldn't mind a constant rotation of complete strangers..." Your argument is just as l

One day in the not-too-distant future, we'll see a headline here "Netflix stops mailing discs to US customers, goes streaming-only." It's (mostly? ideally?) all about the most efficient and user-accepted way to move the bits around.

I'm glad Gdgt ran this full quote. Engadget unfortunately dropped the first part of it from their liveblog (not really a problem, they're typing and submitting pretty quickly) but then ran an article that started "Apple's not really ready t

Having lived for a semester at Vista Way, I think Disney World's College Program is as close to a living in a company town as you can get nowadays in the US. They completely control two municipalities, and provide the jobs, the bank, the ho
