No, type designers want their art to be used. The type industry until recently has been a fairly friendly one as only designers really cared about it. I think it’s more likely that vulture capitalists have discovered a matket that they can

What a wild take. Might as well ask why anyone should pay for anything once it's been made. While it's possible to commission a custom font and many companies do eg. Apple, IBM, Airbnb, Bytedance, Vercel, Github, Mozilla etc. Some

Some really good options there. I did a deep dive a while back looking for small, independent, mostly European type foundries. There’s an incredible range of talent out there. Will never give Monotype and the like another penny.

Ah Monotype. Knew before reading the article it would be them. Their whole MO is buying up smaller type foundries, massively increasing the licensing fees and shaking down the previous customers. They send in auditors, demand to see traffic

Very different strategies. Sketch has been self-funding and sustainable from day 1. They have had 20m funding recently, but a fraction of Figma's 749m. Figma lost over 1bn in Q3 on revenues of 274m. Share price is down 70% from IPO 3 m

A Mac-based video manager that automatically transcribes, translates and summarises videos. I process information best through reading, so I built it to manage my growing collection of training course videos, webinars and meeting recordings

Thanks, will take a look at why it’s not working. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t!

Thanks for your comments, I appreciate it! Yes a core part of what I’ve tried to do is separate content from presentation. This all started by trying to build an alt-protocol like Gemini or Gopher as a minimal writing and publishing experie

Hey thanks! Secrets are stored in the browser cache but not exported, so they’ll persist until the cache is cleared. If you open the site in a new browser you’ll need to re-enter the credentials. I found I wasn’t able to add FTP support wit

I loved quartz composer. It made it really easy to build all sorts of motion graphics. I’d see it used a lot at gigs to create audio-driven visuals. There was even a pretty cool VJ app built on it. I’ve tried things like Touch Designer and

Yeah you’re right, I was trying to put my finger on it, but the slight depth gives it the screen feeling, whereas eink is close to the surface. The Remarkable doesn’t feel like a computer whereas the daylight does.

I’ve got a Daylight and it’s pretty similar to e-ink. Without the backlight the contrast is lower than a newer e-ink display, such as on a Remarkable, so you need good ambient lighting. It being actually backlit rather than front-lit is nic

Bandcamp is your friend here. It’s got an almost infinite selection of the tiniest of micro-genres. Vaportrap? Yes. Blackgaze? Absolutely. Barber beats? Why not. My process is to find or invent a ludicrous sounding genre name, search for it

I used to work for a chief exec like that. They’d see something on someone’s screen and demand changes, destroying months of carefully planned work with a single comment. In the end, we’d build in ‘breakpoints’ - things that we knew they’d

I’ve been exploring this problem for a while, and have been building something which I think might help solve it. I’m currently building a browser-based static site generator that produces clean, simple code. But it does more than that. Alo

I think it started out like that - the previous generation knew it was bullshit bud did whatever got them votes / viewers / attention or whatever, long term consequences be damned. Younger generations grew up in it, never exposed

Safari has had built-in page translate for years now. It’ll detect different languages and show a translate option in the site tools menu. Works well.

I’m building a browser-based static site generator and CMS. I love SSGs as they’re simple and fast and the sites they make can be hosted anywhere with little maintenance. But, after helping a non-technical friend get up and running with one

Most of the classic Disney films are based on public domain stories. If there were copyright, those works wouldn’t have been created.

I love the greenhouse, it’s one of my favourite places in London. Walking around it, exploring the different levels and observing the plants covering the concrete and ductwork makes me feel like I’m in some kind of retro-futuristic space ar

Confirmation bias. We only hear about the heroics that worked. Plenty of heroes end up in unmarked graves. Teams move forward through trust, clear goals and good processes. Individuals may want to be heroic once those elements are in place

Disagree. 9-5 working is fine, and probably more efficient long term than permanent crunches. Organisations fail when the ‘business’ people take over. People who let short term money-thinking make the decisions, instead good taste, vision o

When designing, the standard practice is to use Lorem Ipsum - sort of mangled Latin that works like normal text but is very recognisable. This backfired once when I did a website for the Jesuits - the feedback they gave was that the design

I did something similar a while back to the @fesshole Twitter/Bluesky account. Downloaded the entire archive and fine-tuned a model on it to create more unhinged confessions. Was feeling pretty pleased with myself until I realised that
