There is tremendous value that often goes unrecognised in taking best of brand routines and packaging them so real people can use them, consistently and reliably over decades.

Citation needed. I recall people saying they prefer the concise syntax and speed of development with interpreted languages that do not force type annotations and others who prefer the runtime speed and compiler warnings in a typed language.

How does this handle “pip install” and third party code? It seems the memory safety guarantees depend on reimplementing things in Rust (for stdlib modules), which would be interesting in and of itself, as well as formal verification.

In rpython (a restricted python2 language) unicode refers to a specific python object. Utf-8 classes refers to rpython classes that hold a bytes, not unicode, but are aware of the encoding of the bytes.

That conversion should not happen only when needed, i.e. when interfacing via ffi to system calls.

Not really. The UnicodeObject has utf8 bytes, a length in codepoints, and an optional index map that is only calculated if needed to traverse the string. Most strings won’t need the map. String matching is utf8 aware, and indexes by codepoi

No. RPython still supports unicode strings. It now also supports utf8 string classes for things like regular expressions and ffi calls. PyPy just uses the non-unicode rpython apis.
