Sure, it's certainly not perfect. In the cases where I've used it the benefits far far outweigh the negatives you've pointed out. I feel like you need to enter with an open mind for any conversion to PDF...

It doesn't necessarily need to be built into the language that the content is being produced in. I came across HTMLDOC, for example. I suppose anything that can run on linux.
