I hope Roubini is wrong, but I have to be amused at the people who want to put duct tape over his mouth. We have too much debt in the U.S. Our solution so far has been to transfer bad debt from the banks to the government, and then add a b

Hear hear. I do not doubt that shit ain't easy. But that doesn't stop politicians from doing half-assed implementations of much more difficult projects, so I don't think that's any kind of excuse for not legalizing pot.

"I do not think that phrase means what you think it means . . ." oh, wait, who was the author of the article again? The article is strange to me. First, I thought Taleb scorned the FT crowd. Second, since when did he start writing in bull

Blithely asserted. But suppose it is correct. Do you think parents might start caring more about managing their kids' educations if they could see that caring more actually made a difference?

I was scanning and did a double take on this part: "A high net-worth individual with whom the Baldwins have partnered" For a moment I thought they were talking about Alec Baldwin and his brothers as producers. My Imp of the Perverse is sad

Being an articulate advocate for an extreme position is an accomplishment all by itself. It opens people's minds. It makes people smarter. I think RMS's positions are extreme. I don't share most of his views, including his latest concern

Pro. I'm not a zombie-movie aficionado, but I've seen several. My favorite is probably Dead and Breakfast. Comic horror, musical interludes. I liked it better than Shawn of the Dead. Fun. If you're going for scary, though, I vote for s

You can hope for a popular backlash against big government and associated interest groups. This happens from time to time, and sometimes the interest groups get pushed back somewhat as a result. I think this is unlikely in the U.S. any tim

Very good writing. You have to distrust yourself a little after reading an article like this. Am I persuaded by the message, or charmed by the style?

What vaskel said. You may have more leverage than you think. I'm pretty sure in my state (Kansas) your credit rating cannot be dinged for late payment on a medical bill. Used to be the case anyway. It would be handy to know if that was

I'm sure you took my meaning. It doesn't sound like you're correct though. At least S & P suggested that the U.S. might lose it's AAA rating. (Note also the article is from 2006, while we were still in the boom.) http://www.savings-b

Yes, of course, let us in the U.S. keep telling ourselves that China (and Japan) have no other option but to keep extending us ever increasing amounts of debt. Our credit is safe , it is rated AAA, there are no other outlets, a U.S. deb

Wealth is being extracted in the form of +trillion dollar bailouts. The loss comes from the taxpayer (and eventually, dollar holders), so it isn't quite what the OP meant, but there is one hell of an extraction taking place.

I'd love to see grading and ranking and sorting separated from teaching and learning. IMO grading (as opposed to guidance and correction) is destructive to real learning. At the least, we should separate the teacher from the grader. To me

My ASP.NET is a little rusty, but I did a fair bit upon a time. Bottom line, if you drink the Kool-Aid and do it their way, it's not so bad. If you try to translate some other web stack concepts into ASP.NET, you're going to be very frust

I'd recommend writing your own contract/agreement if you can. Keep it short and simple, what you'll do, how much you'll get paid, when you'll get paid. Also, that you own the code. I'd recommend being up front about possible reselling.
