I don't see Reddit as one place like Slashdot was one place. I'm sure it still has horrific subs, but the ones I'm on are little islands of well-moderated chit-chat, local jokes and retro-computing.

The in jokes became racist and nobody seemed to care. Seemed like a sad end to a site that was pioneering in community moderation.

I must have read this when I was 12; the image of the eyeball and the smoke lived in my head rent-free. I was reminded of it by that creepy-ass bio-CPU company we discussed earlier (also by Lena...).

I made a feature contribution to Xen years ago that ended up with a few lines in the kernel. Got merged pretty promptly but no credit that I can find. I didn't notice at the time but now I'm job hunting, past credits seem a bit mo

I liked it too, paid for it for a few months. But every so often it would start lagging by about 1000ms. Tthe only solution was to reinstall the Windows drivers. This happened with both iPhone and Android devices, and more than once, so I c

My mum has a heat pump install which she hates for being lukewarm all the time. It feels underspecced! When I've looked at one for my home to replace a 24kW gas boiler, all I can find is 14kW kits. Am I missing something? Can I not mat

1/100 UK properties is an (Airbnb) short let of some sort. But I don't buy that a few highly-leveraged people panic-selling their portfolios is going to bring down house prices at all. Even if that caused some _local_ downward pre

My very first paid job in 1997 was extending a PC emulator product for an ARM desktop computer with a 486 co-processor. I was a teenager who knew a bit of C & ARM code, otherwise no hardware or x86 knowledge at all. Obviously PCs have

More than that (as referenced above), `synchronized` currently pins a virtual thread to its carrier. So if you had 4 carrier threads, you only need to have 4 synchronized methods in flight that depend on the action of a 5th to hang the JVM.

For sure, yes, it's from 2006! I didn't have that one to hand, but remember the O'Reilly "Java Threads" book from 1999 and >50% of that was still useful for bringing a younger colleague up to speed.

How much old advice on Java concurrency will virtual threads change? I'm building a course for people who are new to Java concurrency and I've made the assumption that from September, you will almost always _choose_ virtual thread

A straight upgrade, that I can do :) It's been running for years without one. I was only edgy about it because when it takes 36h it blocks the next daily backup, and I wondered whether that was going to get worse (it hasn't).
