The issue is actually that there aren't, let's say I go to derby, how many ML engineers will I find, or infrastructure coders, Biomed researchers or industrial chemists. Not that many.

I didn't vote for Brexit, but the thing is it's not really helpful to re-rake the coals on that one - it knocked our GDP, some kind of common market with the EU would clearly be good for trade.. but to what end, we can't chan

We do have devolved powers, so Scotland and Wales* have functioning Regional Governments, with devolved funding from a formula that gives them substantially more money than they collect in tax. So they should be doing great right? Wrong. Th

You could easily have your CI keyed on tags or commits, reviewing my own code is very helpful but also so wasteful of time.

It's a mindset thing for some people I think, they have a "flow" and just continue using it. I sort of see it, but it's a time sink. Personally if I'm working by myself absolutely not, commit straight to main or a f

I think that's a bit debatable. In Barcelona there's a shortage of housing and more would grow growth. In a random town building more houses does promote construction led economic growth even if not other growth.

Like all these things even in a market like Spain thn solution for one area can create issues in others. Barcelona suffers very different problems to Santander. I think it would actually make it easier if I could just pay 100K tax to have p

But if you go to a cafe and order pancakes how do you know what you'll get! A simply unacceptable gamble in my mind! Imagine looking forward to a normal pancake and getting a rubbery American one popped infront of you.

Rackspace where the archetypal provider and they sucked. The irony is I've only actually ever really seen internal open stack instances, providers for whatever reason seem to prefer to roll thier own

io2 high durability is 1 in 100,000 per year. S3 has 99.999999999% durability as standard. I see your point that it's not technically 100% but, as close as can be reasonably achieved.

Yes, I'm aware. It doesn't reduce or negate the need for a team responsible for running storage and understanding how it works, then a team owning databases (probably with some development resources too) and so on. It actually tak

The upside of having a "aws" level competitor that pays taxes in Europe, could be worth billions or more.

You need teams of people, the good news is that they're available here. It's not hard as such just requires time and money (quite a lot). It's not just kubernetes and openFaaS, what about that thing that's a virtual appl

That's a great start but it doesn't actually solve much. It's a closed system so I can only buy hardware through them, what if at some later date the US demand hardware backdoors, what if due to tariff (or other drama) we can

Are OVH decent? I'm not entirely sure that they're even passable and what other options would you have in Europe?

Who are based where? Same fundamental problem right, you still can't get overall security (of continued supply, support and software/firmware)

Yes, I know. I wouldn't really want to use OVH for anything besides bare metal, same for hetzner (even then, they're not great at it). The only good providers I'd use again are London based.

The main problem to my mind is that we have none. OVH are perhaps the only semi serious option and that's super depressing.

I think killing software jobs is a bit of a silly argument, it's not a better world that we've got 1,000 closed source jpeg decoders rather than one excellent open source one. What I do find massively problematic is that the devel

"Next.js enabled websites to approach iPhone app quality." This is a fascinating perspective, because building PWAs with raw js and very early react I always felt these were as good as iPhone app quality.

This is a great idea. I'm a little supprised booking platforms aren't doing enough to handle this. It feels like it could be solvable if the platform got told about no-shows you could at the very least blacklist that email address

Basically it seems to be worth about 1.333X as much as a 4090, as it has about ~1.4X performance ~1.333X the VRAM but uses about 1.4X the power. So 4090 is still a reasonable option. One thing that concerns me is running these dies at 500w+

Pretty much all investments work this way. I'm not saying they are on the poverty line - let's say in the UK, standard rate for a great full time programmer or average tech lead is 100k, as a co-founder you'd be earning say 5

Sure, but in some cases it's also a great way to become very very wealthy. It entirely depends on your personality and circumstances, it's certainly not for everyone.
