If you rent dedicated servers, then you're not worrying about any of the capex or maintenance stuff.

There are a number of providers who provision dedicated servers via API in minutes these days. Given a dedicated server starts at around $90/Month it probably does make sense for alot of people.

Renting (hosted) servers above 128GB RAM is still pretty easy, but I agree pricing levels out. 128GB RAM server ~$200/Month, 384 GB ~$580, 1024 GB ~$940/Month

A thoroughly good article. It's probably worth also considering adding a CDN if you take this approach at scale. You get to use their WAF and DNS failover. A big pain point that I personally don't love is that this non-cloud appro

I agree, 5-10 years ago businesses would have a RAID 5 server in a closet backing up to azure. Even that would be a big step up from office 365

It does totally ridiculous things, very fast. That's not a good thing. I imagine it might be good for something really tight and simple and specific like making some CRUD endpoints or i8n files or something but otherwise..

Honestly it's just tragedy of the commons. Why put the effort in when you don't have to identify yourself, just crawl and if you get blocked move the job to another server.

In all fairness, I don't see how they're wrong in saying we need a UK Cloud Capability even if phrased 'as if it’s some sort of nuclear arsenal'. It is actually quite problematic that falling out with Microsoft would mea

I'm seeing around the same, as a fairly constant base load. Even more annoying when it's hitting auth middleware constantly, over and over again somehow expecting a different answer.

I have zero issue with Ai Agents, if there's a real user behind there somewhere. I DO have a major issue with my sites being crawled extremely aggressively by offenders including Meta, Perplexity and OpenAI - it's really annoying

Scotland has less than a tenth of the population of England, and 0 cloud regions. Around ~70,000 workers in IT/Tech and only two or three real colo datacentres of any note (>140 racks).

188M input / 80M output tokens per hour was per node I thought? Reversing out these numbers tells us that they're paying about $2/H100/Hour (or $16/hour for a 8xH100 node). Disclaimer (one of my sites) https:/

This is basically we can't country restrict O365 storage/processing isn't it. We can spin up a custom instance for a huge amount of money effort (e.g govcloud) but off the shelf it goes wherever there's free space or sim

Not really practical it wouldn't transfer much energy at all. Let's say that your coolant comes in at 30 degrees c, well if your air is 40° and you've got no fans you can do the maths but it may as well be 0.

Indeed, and the problem is once you've committed to fans and liquid cooling you can reduce the complexity and plate size massively by just cooling the big wins (CPU/GPU). I've actually seen setups where they only cold plate t

The CDUs are essentially just passive water to water heat exchangers with some fancy electronics attached. You want to run a different chemical mix outside to the chillers as you do on the internal loop, it also helps regulate flow/pre

It's interesting because I've never seen mainframes do water to water (though I'm sure that was possible). The only ones I've ever seen do water to compressor (then gas to the outdoor condenser, obviously)

It depends but often cheapest prices IME are; 1) as the flight is released (e.g a year in advance or more) or 2) about 5 weeks out.

Completely agree. If anything it's too low, if you take a look at even old VMware pricing the market will happily pay far more.

Yes, very much so but I think it's probably a self fulfilling thing? If I care about the data model so much that I want to diagram it then it's going to be the exact DB schema.

The pictures of Dropbox is from the rear of the rack, oxide is the front. Oxide may well have a neater 'rear' though as they sell it as a whole system so will have bus bars and similar rather than PDUs and cables I imagine.

I do, of course. It's just worth considering that not every parent is how you or I might like or imagine them to be. For some children their parents finding out they're gay would cause a great deal of real world physical or phycol

Doubling the PDUs seems shockingly wasteful as apposed to just reducing equipment per rack slightly, there's no way you can consistently cool 30KW/rack with air (well, OK, you could but it's much more inefficient or would req

This has been known for quite a while, in distributed systems single socket for storage is both far cheaper and typically faster. I remember building these with E3-v5 a good while back.

It's not really designing to be honest here, what they describe is more "specifying". These will just be fairly off the shelf designs with thier own choice of ram/disk/CPU and so on.
