It's hard to remember what the Internet was like in 1996. I do it by remembering that in 1997 I started an ISP to offer blazing-fast 56K dialup to the indifferent grandparents of Long Island for $19.95/month. We had a computer on display

I made a geeky version of this using an industrial stack light, an Arduino, some MOSFETs, an RFID card reader, and node.js. Pictures: http://imgur.com/a/dX33N Videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bButG4EWSfE https://www.youtube.com/

What about the Kinect video chat? Isn't that based on Messenger? I would be happy to see that change to Skype.

I figured I'd try it out, but lost my enthusiasm after unsuccessfully attempting to search for the app for five minutes. Next time pick a distinctive name.

MediaMath - New York City - full time I'll keep it short. My team is looking to add some frontend developers: modern HTML5/Backbone.js/etc. stuff. We are also looking for solid Perl developers to work on our Catalyst-based API. If either o

I like it, though I got around curl's painful syntax by wrapping it in a few shell script. For example, here's my api_post script (meant to be used like "api_post users/123 first_name=Foo last_name=Bar") (pardon my incompetent shell script

My tip for using Jenkins (or CI in general): have your build script produce a single-file artifact. You don't have a .war file, but what you can do is simply tar or zip your project. I recommend having a source directory and a build direc

Rails developers seem to be having this revelation a lot recently. I don't think it's a particularly new idea, and I don't see why Rails vs Node vs Java has anything to do with it. MVC is ok for a backend that's "just an API" (although th

It's great that Microsoft has (for whatever reason, it doesn't matter) taken up the banner of standards compliance, modernization, etc. It doesn't change the fact that IE9 is still a pain in the ass for real-world developers making the cur

People who are successful by accident sometimes develop a tendency to preach that the only way to be successful is to do what they did. It's almost like a kind of auto-cargo-cultism. "I had a pear tree in my front yard when I made my firs

This guy thinks his kid is cute, because it's his kid, but I don't like the part where he deliberately irritates everyone in the hardware store. I don't think your kid is cute, so please keep it out of my way.
