I am pro github pages. Used it for 5 years, no complaints. [1] However, I've chosen to also use Jekyll. Github pages explicitly supports/couples with Jekyll [2], so I view the combination as a single dependency as opposed to an ex

Heres an article where Paul Graham in 2012 calls out Gmail for being slow, and stating that he would be willing to pay $50-$1000 a month for a good email experience. [1] http://www.paulgraham.com/ambitious.html

The second-order effects that are described here around the "capture of upside" may be a little exaggerated. Credit cards and Stripe are common payment mechanisms for consumer, prosumer, and self-serve SAAS. I'm not denying t

I've been to a couple cat cafes where I've noticed the cats are a little anti-social. Instead of forcing interaction, most of my time is spent observing the cats. I imagine part of it could be a stressful environment, but my hypot

Agreed. The blog post even mentions numpy, meinheld and uwsgi as examples of native code performant libraries. The async equivalent is uvloop.

The author probably cares about either copy-left or the right to tinker. Some people believe it's important and others don't. Basically any derivative product out of GPL3 code needs to either be open-source/copy-left, or if i

I like the idea of fact-checking in theory, but in practice the epistemology gets pretty messy. Donald Trump says "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S manufacturing non-competitive.&quo

Yes, though keep in mind that Twitter/Hacker News power users are often very privacy conscious. I think people are happy about offline mode regardless of how relatively fast or accurate it is.

I think an analogy everybody would understand is to think of a regular web app. If you need to add Internet Explorer support to a website that only supports Chrome, does it make sense to fork the website? Almost never. You just inline hardc

In my opinion Tiktok is a viable replacement for Instagram, a platform that generates on the order of 10B USD revenue a year. They both have pub/sub models where you can follow topics or celebrities or content creators you care about.
