A 15" MacBook Air with the hi-res 1680 x 1050 of the current 15" MBP and 8GB of RAM would be my idea of ideal. I hope that when the MacBook Pros refresh, it will be in this general direction.

I find kj easier to type, since it's an outward muscle movement. Warning: If you do this you will wind up typing those characters by memory nearly everywhere.kj

This is a fantastic article. I'm sad it didn't get any traction here. Maybe resubmit it with a better title?

There is http://codeforamerica.org/ although that doesn't exactly fit your description. I would be very interested if someone knows of something more along the OP's lines.

Buy the LG Optimus V from Virgin Mobile. It's not super-powerful smartphone, but it does everything that I need it to and is only $150. Then get the $35 / month plan that goes with it. To tether you only have to download the "Quick Settings

Building a simple photo sharing app as an exercise to learn Django and some jQuery. My background is in math / scientific computation so it's interesting to see things from this perspective. I'm hoping to start freelancing in a few weeks :)

If you're referring to the US, there are laws against it in a few states, but it is not outright illegal. Even in the states where there are laws against it, many people successfully do it every year. It is the general perception though. h
