For a long time, I had been hearing that bloggers should create ebooks or other "info-products" if they want to generate any meaningful income. As a result, I've recently launched an experiment; a small book with tips for st

These numbers are from my blog, http://foodconstrued.com I have one sidebar ad, and usually one ad at the bottom of each entry. Last month (September) I had 4873 page views and 25 clicks. This resulted in $8.75. My best month w

It's so hard to recommend something without a frame of reference. Personally, I've found myself re-reading The Lord of the Rings lately. But, if I had to pick one book that was my favourite, I might say Moby Dick . (I'll admit that I a

I made a tool ( http://complex-area-calculator.appspot.com ) for calculating areas of polygons. Initially, it was really just cobbled together and there are a lot of problems with the code. I'm currently in the process of a re-write, but by

I don't often deal with SQL and when I do, it is usually quite simple. But, I think there is actually an error in the first step: SELECT avg(rating), wine_id FROM app_wine GROUP BY wine_id; The query sho

I've recently enjoyed a biography of Kristian Birkeland ( http://www.amazon.com/The-Northern-Lights-Unlocked-Borealis/... ). Birkeland worked to find the source of the northern lights, but he sold other inventions in order to fund his resea

Times have changed I guess. The last time I applied for work was over twenty years ago. Back then resumes were printed on paper and mailed (or hand delivered) to prospective employers. It was very rare to never hear back. You almost alwa

It all comes down to people's perceptions. When they hear that something is organic or natural, many people assume it must be better for us, and if it is better, it must contain more nutrients. Food company's like to use this to their adva

I think there is a Canadian tendency avoid risk. With the tech sector this means that if government funding is not immediately available, nothing is worth risking your own money. I'm reminded of one my history professors who used to say th

I know a person who routinely says "I smoke a pack of cigarettes a day. It doesn't affect my health and I don't have lung cancer, so the doctors must be wrong." The truth is your habits will catch up to you. Eventually.

I don't think inexperience in the NDP is really going to be much of an issue initially. Given that the Conservatives now have a majority, even a veteran opposition would have a hard time being effective. Hopefully, we'll see these "kids" b

I think that is exactly the point the chef was making. Consumers in general are not willing to pay (or can't pay) for high quality frozen food. Look at how many brands are available in the $2-$3 range vs. higher cost items.
