nix + home-manager will get you pretty good coverage for non-commercial software. The learning curve is steep but once you get there it's amazing.

Do you find that it just pushes the argument "up the stack"? And now instead of the discussion being about the code you're arguing about which outcome would be less astonishing? It seems like it would move the conversation

In a statically-typed language you’d just get a compile error. The compiler knows the types of the values in the map and whether or not the (+) operation is valid for them. You’d likely need a little more code than what’s in the GP post,

Basic YAML, sure, but YAML has some insane features that I don't think would be possible to replicate in JSON. Or, at least, you'd lose some information in the conversion. For example, YAML supports the concept of reusable fragme

I thought solid state Lidar was still under development, at least as far as cheap mass production goes. Is that not the case? Or is that just true for lidar that’s powerful enough for self-driving cars? Or is this not solid-state lidar?

Yes, that's what happens, although "best buddy" is really "company that pays us the most for the orders." I am not sure if you meant it this way but "best buddy" implies that something shady is going on.

Then this solution sounds like a huge improvement. Instead of getting to the register and finding out you grabbed the wrong thing or overspent, which is a huge inconvenience to you and the other people in line, you can now track everything

One thing I did to combat this was refuse to allow any recurring meetings on Fridays. I almost always end up with a couple of one-offs but I can usually put those at the start of the day. Typically this results in 6+ hours of uninterrupte

Does Seattle allow for stores that don't accept cash? I know NYC recently passed something that said you can't run a credit card-only store as it excludes the unbanked.

With the introduction of Spectrum you can back a Redshift table with data in S3 directly. I'm not sure how that interacts with the materialized views though. Probably not supported yet but I would expect it to be eventually.

Interestingly even in your link you can see that most of the money values (subtotal, total_fare, total_charged) are strings but for some reason total_owed is a float. Presumably someone messed up but it wasn't caught in code review.
