Human subjects research has ethical obligations that at times go beyond what seems like common sense, but are still really important because of past ethical abuses. See http://www.maxmasnick.com/2014/06/28/fac

I just wrote a blog post about the ethical/professional obligations of the researchers associated with this study: http://www.maxmasnick.com/2014/06/28/facebook/ When you publish a paper, you are su

I've been using Telegram for several months and have found that it is much more reliable than iMessages. The key feature for me is that you can access messages through a web app, and through native desktop apps on Mac and Windows. This

Amen. I switched to FastMail from Gmail more than a year ago and also absolutely love it. I highly recommend it for anyone dissatisfied with Gmail. A few things that may be helpful for people considering making the switch: - If FastMail

Also, the age of the tweet or gist would be a red flag. If the signed gist is 2 years old and hasn't even modified since, you can pretty safely assume that if the keybase public key matches the signed message in the gist, nothing nefar

I agree with the OP about uploading private keys being bad, but you don't have to do that – everything works without doing that as long as you are comfortable in the command line. Whether or not uploading private keys should be an opti

Jumping rope regularly has helped me avoid shin splints. 10 minutes once a week seems to do the trick for me (now that I can jump for 10 minutes straight -- took a bit to get there).

I also agree -- this makes me very happy to be a FastMail customer. Can you imagine any of the other big email providers offering this kind of technical explanation of data loss, or going to these lengths to recover every message possible?

Totally agree re: Toggl (UX issues really bugged me -- time tracking can and should be low friction) and Timely (pretty but flawed interface). Also totally agree re: quantified-self time tracking and its usefulness.

Three quick thoughts on some details: 1) Please, PLEASE make sure it's quick/easy to enter time with the keyboard. Right now the main log time interface doesn't let you tab to select the project drop down. I feel like I shoul

I really don't understand how the author of the parent post is still angry about this. 37s did the responsible thing by continuing to fully support the old version, giving users time to migrate (or not migrate). I think there are a lot

From a public health perspective, this kind of news story is actually very helpful. The reason is that before H1N1, one of the main reasons for young, healthy people to get the flu vaccine was to protect at-risk populations through herd imm

I posted below that FastMail is a good Gmail alternative, and switching isn't that painful. See http://www.maxmasnick.com/2013/07/19/fastmail/ (Posting again here so you (might) be notified.)

Thanks for your reply! I definitely agree that all things AWS are terrible in terms of learning curve and usability. It's easy to forget how unintuitive setting up static hosting on S3 is (bucket policies, ugh). So I guess your real co

I agree. The infinite scroll is really well-implemented in FastMail. It's much better than the pagination in Gmail, which makes it extremely difficult to jump, say, 2/3 of the way down in a search or label with thousands of hits.

I have Arq ( http://www.haystacksoftware.com/arq/ ) set to back up my ~/git folder every hour. At most I can lose an hour of work. This came in handy once when I accidentally did the equivalent of rm -rf ~/git.
