Okay, so it does depend on the representation, but most reasonable representations will work. I guess the big exception would be trying to do this on something that is already compressed, like a gzipped bmp, or something.

Oh. Then I suppose two days is quite good. I don't think you really need quite that depth, but if you want it, I don't know if doing it much faster is possible. (It might be possible, I just don't know.)

Has to? Are you saying that the whole thing would not fall apart if, say, someone used color images instead of greyscale?

Two days to understand the ESSENCE?? I understand that there are a lot of details, and those can take a lot of time to master, but the essence should be really quick. To wit: 1. Merge sort. Given two sorted sequences, they can be merged

Ok, lovely, but why is this useful? Like, is there any problem where this is the simplest way to solve it?

Can someone remind me what that's for? I never use it, I keep trying to look it up and then I forget it again. Maybe because I never quite understood it properly.

I think what pizlonator meant is that some languages like C have pervasive undefined behavior. (For instance, INT_MAX + 1 is allowed to erase your hard drive.) The claim is that this allows compiler optimizations that would otherwise not

Well, then in the babysitting case, the solution is clearly to have school ALSO start later. Might be a bit impractical to coordinate that.

I have a possibly dumb question. Wouldn't those students also be better off? They work the same number of hours, but later in the day. Unless it's the kind of thing that can't be one hour later?

Funny thing is, this is the Grace Hopper Program, so it would be totally appropriate for them to teach COBOL. After all, they're named after its inventor. (Okay, technically, it was a committee, but still, you don't get nickname

I think this answers your earlier question. We don't have tools that implement "C". We only have tools that implement supersets of C. In particular, these tools take code like the above and do "something" with th
