Yes, CPU cycles is the most expensive. Great discussion here on Stackoverflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/149274/http-vs-https-perf...

In the audiocast they said they have the occasional parking ticket. I use visa consultants. If they set up a website front I'd be happy to seek them out next time I go to China. Sounds like they know the system inside out and $20 is a small

Regarding "All software downloads should be provided only over HTTPS", this is very expensive to provide, but is allowing users to compare a checksum an equally secure option?

Yes, you are correct. I used the wrong terminology here to express my argument.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call the work displayed here art, but I do agree that it can be admired on it's own merits.

Does bandcamp have a 'random' radio feed? I was unable to find it. (radio.bandcamp.com leads to a particular band).

I think we'll find it comes down to clever marketing. I suspect that this project works because it's a) the first to come off the back of C.K.'s project and b) targeting HN which is usually responsive to innovation. He could probably get so

Yes, that's understood, I realise I used the terminology incorrectly. I've just been reading up on DNS and regulatory control and now more deeply understand that DNS is an extremely difficult problem to solve so that it outside of overt dis

Better than nightschool would be to spend time developing your own product. Look around you, and any time you run into a problem (I wish I could do X easier or cheaper) think if you could build a system that does that. There are plenty of h

One example: the free software movement should lead to a better DNS system where governments and corporations will have no control over how and where we access information online. I continue to support the EFF and groups like it in order to

Yes, you have a good point about not being able to take time off work. I am sure this is blocking a lot of people from upping their education. Would night school be too much of a drain? There must be evening classes for programming in SV so

Perhaps try one of the new bootcamps and get a couple of months of code education. You sound like the kind of person who would be a good intern hire, according to your post you have plenty of self-motivation which counts in your favour.

I compel you to consider the life narrative of women and men who choose to be objectified sexually: I believe you will find that none of them thought when they were young, 'I want to grow up to be objectified for my body'. It is not so much

That's a good question I couldn't find the answer for. What I can tell you is what happens as a MailChimp user: if I send out an email and someone clicks the 'this is SPAM' button in their mail client, MailChimp notifies me that this happen

Mailchimp for example, provides this information. It's one reason why Mailchimp and SendGrid et al are so useful. It pays for itself when we send out a newsletter to thousands of emails.

Filevault isn't supported by the major media editing apps. I travel a lot and rely on having a 'fake' account on my drive that I can login to if asked that has pretty much nothing on it.

I really disagree about making it 'easier' to login to your online banking. Those who are savvy enough know what they are doing and can handle complex password / authorization combos. Until we have better solutions leave it complex and let

As an international contractor you are best to set yourself up as a company or self-trader and invoice appropriately. You should then be subject to normal international outsourcing behaviour in regards to the paying company's tax.

Be careful doing this, as there are official rules whether someone is a contractor or not, not just 'because I call myself one'. You can in theory get hit for payroll taxes. http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=99921,00.h...

We've experienced location-wide outages due to natural disasters in host centers - putting all our servers in one place is no longer an option, so we're looking at a combo of colo and cloud. We're scaling up to 5 locations in the next month

This brings up a question I've also wondered when looking at moving to EC2: it simply costs more to run when you have a few servers that use up a lot of bandwidth. At what scale does it become more efficient?
