I was looking at getting the Xeon-based NUC recently and one of the reasons I decided against it was that ECC SO-DIMMs seem to be a really marginal product. If you want ECC, something that takes full-size DIMMs seems much easier to buy me

I've always wondered whether payloads weren't super-expensive precisely because the launches were, too. I mean, if you are spending hundreds of millions to launch something, that something better work once up there, right? So you

It doesn't have a ton of games, but if it has the games you're interested in, why not? I just ordered the Premiere bundle (to get 4K) and expect to play Red Dead Redeption 2, Jedi Fallen Order and The Elder Scrolls Online. They do

The absolutely funniest interpretation of ”legitimate interest” is in a recurring spam message I get from (of all things) an email lead marketing company. They have small print after each of their emails that says that GDPR allows them to e

Apple's angle here is that everybody who needs a Mac has to buy or rent one. That seems super obvious. It also happens to align them with people who are in the business of selling or renting Macs, sure. But the point is not to screw AW

It’s the next step up from 10G (which our peak traffic is outgrowing). If you look at older/used networking gear, 40G QSFP+ might look like the next step, but to me that’s starting to look a bit like an evolutionary dead end at this po

I looked up one of the devices mentioned here: Juniper’s 2U-sized PTX10002. Turns out the list price for PTX10002-60C-AC-R is $720,000.00. :-o The traffic volumes these devices are intended for are truly mind-boggling to me (as someone curr

Apple's Mac category revenue was $9 billion in the latest quarter, up 29% year-on-year—growing faster than any other category. And this was before the M1 launch. At this revenue run rate, a standalone Mac company would be in the Fortun

Sure, but not macOS workloads. What most (all?) of these benchmarks fail to capture is the difference made by the specific optimizations for Apple's software stack. Things like the five times faster ARC retain/release cycle or the

More likely than not, those servers are at AWS. And if that's the case, once all the components have ARM images the server instances can be switched over to the M6g instance type for significant cost savings.

A better title would be an ”ambitious multi-year vision for Adobe Reader” as this isn’t changing the PDF format at all: it is simply a new, buzzword-compliant (AI! ML!) content-reflowing UI for the reader app.

We’re using Minio storage on our own hardware to save on S3 egress transfer fees. It wouldn’t be very attractive based on the storage fee alone, but if you have any traffic at all, the traffic will dominate your calculations. Of course, you

When the scam is big enough, there are consequences for the auditors. Enron sank Arthur Andersen, for example. Didn’t hurt the consulting arm (now Accenture) though.

The first and second stages of a Falcon 9 use a combined ~163 000 litres (43 000 gallons) of RP-1 fuel. This is less than the fuel capacity of a Boeing 777-300ER. So if the Starlink launches happen twice a month, the carbon footprint from t

I think you're exactly right. It has become a HN trope that every cost optimization story gets a response like this: your infrastructure costs are trumped by the cost of your developers, so why spend the expensive resource (developers)

My read was that they actually saved over $8000 per month: - They mention that the initial savings of $1500/mo from omitting unnecessary headers was 12% of their egress cost (so the total before this was $12500) - Then they got an addi
