Semaphore ( https://semaphoreci.com ) recently introduced pay-per-use model with autoscaling, so you don’t have to pay a large sum just to run a few parallel jobs (disclaimer: cofounder here, open for questions).

The term for what you're describing is Product Management. My favorite speaker on the topic is Marty Cagan https://svpg.com . As a developer you're in a great position to just do it by building a product of your own.

I have not described nor have hands-on experience with all-in approach to microservices. In our practice all user-facing stuff comes from a monolith. I'd probably argue that fragmenting UI-serving backend so much is not necessary for 9

CI resource-wise, splitting things is actually more beneficial for customers than vendors. Gives more throughput.

Consider a contrary argument. If every app in the universe was composed of microservices that do one thing and test out in 5 seconds, then there'd be no need for CI, only monitoring & continuous deployment.

Yeah sorry for not being clear there, by hard limit I didn't mean that CI should fail the build. But that the number should be a fixed threshold for the team to optimize for. Thanks for your feedback.

I'd advise definitely covering all usage scenarios with Selenium. And then parallelize. Overall unit tests should greatly outnumber UI/integration/acceptance tests. And when you catch a bug with Selenium test, replicate it at

Oh, I meant that "size of the code does not have to be a linear scalar". Also by hard limit I didn't mean that the build should auto-fail or anything (sry English is my 2nd language). But if we have a rule of thumb, we can kn

Hi, author here. I do come from a team making a CI service, and it took us a lot of time to realize that it'd be useful to have a time-based hard limit for what's good enough. And for anything over that you're obliged to take
