I used to work at Microsoft, and their corporate web site it's largely informational and is maintained by operations guys. I think it's under the HR division. The development structure isn't the same as msn.com or live.com, which have dedic

Something equally impressive is Facebook's growth last month, which was around 21% (according to compete). For a six-year old site as massive as Facebook to experience 20% growth in one month is tremendous.

Looks great! I tried uploading a pptx and it worked flawlessly. This is probably the most impressive demo I've ever seen on HN.

Has anyone tried running Windows 7 in VMWare? The boot sector got corrupted when I tried, so it's hard to answer the question. ( I suppose it runs great in Hyper-V, but who actually runs Virtual Server?).

Actually, the flash platform is largely open source. The AIR framework (along with the rest of Flex) is open source. See http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/flexsdk/Get+Source+... The AIR compiler is also open source. The only thing

There are already open-source router firmwares, it wouldn't make much sense for Google to try this. One of the well-known ones is XORP: http://www.xorp.org/

I suppose it would be like an extended camping trip. First I'd go to the local book store and buy as many survival guides as I can get my hands on. Then I'd buy some high quality tools - knives, leathermans, nail clippers, matches, first ai

The best you'll find is hibernate -- http://www.hibernate.org/ . It's not exactly like SQLAlchemy because Java is statically typed, but it's better than using the Java db layer directly.

What browser do you use? Scrolling with the wheel works fine in Scribd, at least in Firefox. Not to be pedantic, but the Adobe Flash Runtime is tiny compared to Acrobat or Word, and effectively has a 0 startup cost.

The more browsers that exist, the more stakeholders there will be in HTML 5, and the longer it will take for it to be implemented across the board. And if the process is anything like ECMAScript, it could literally take a decade. Flash does

About the speed issue - how is a 20 MB reader (Adobe Reader 9) plus the cost of downloading the entire pdf faster than a 200 kb swf file and having the document streamed? That makes no sense.

Have you ever thought about using flash for your web chat service? I'd actually prefer it over standard javascript, especially because it would have a real socket connection. Also, flash has pretty good support for text rendering. You can e
