Alex Martelli I recognise; he's a python guru (behind the Python Cookbook, among other things) now working at google. There's a couple of excellent tech-talks on (mostly) advanced python by him that are well worth watching if you use pytho

My gut feeling is that the mobile arena might be where html5 takes off first, with the number of webkit-based browsers out there now (iphone, android).

They're no more about hiding mutable state than imperative languages are about hiding the purely-functional representation of state transfer semantics :) All you've done is listed alternative ways of implementing things, which is obviously

Even better is to follow up the original usage of that hack, by Lenart Augustsson (pretty much everything he does impresses me), where he embeds a BASIC interpreter in haskell and uses it to make 10 PRINT "hello" valid :)

I'm almost willing to cut them some slack on that point since this is a bugfix release (it might just be the function that lists the bugs fixed). But I'd rather focus on the comedy :)

I wondered that too. I wonder if they just don't notice it because the modern VMs they mainly use would cache or inline it, but older implementations do a search for the property each time? (I'm speculating on both those points)

I always wondered about that; there's an excellent tech-talk by Rob Pike on newsqueak here that I watched some time ago: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=810232012617965344 (It includes the same primes example that crops up in the

Indeed, sorry, I realised my mistake when it was too late to edit. I think the best that could come out of this is a unified interface (eg, pidgin) for those that do want to run it.

I came here to post just that. I drift in and out of Mac fandom, but the text in that ad is inspirational every time. Also, has any other ad anywhere ever done a better job of defining a culture (at least an aspirational one)?
