If you are truly concerned about network costs, I'd recommend rendering an XML model on the server and using a cached extensible stylesheet (XSLT) to render your HTML on the fly, on the client.

No, that's the RPC part.

But before you use RPC, try rendering your markup on the server. That, too, reduces a lot of complexity.

> browsers simply didn’t use XHTML Do you mean "developers didn't use XHTML"? All browsers implement XHTML. It's referred to as "the second concrete syntax for HTML" in the WHATWG spec.[1] Indeed many websit

Agreed, except MutationObserver has made dealing with DOM modifications much easier.

I'm still happily using userChrome.css and userContent.css in Firefox to customize both its UI as well as a couple of sites I visit regularly. To do so, you need to enable toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets in about:co

REST is missing. Should be about hypermedia. Now means JSON API. See: https://roy.gbiv.com/untangled/2008/rest-apis-must-be-hypert...

Agreed. Don't understand why they don't do it. Would love to have my employer spend money on Discord, indirectly financing free voice chat for my evening gaming sessions...

Why not call it Mumble then? I was also confused by the name. That's not necessarily a good first impression.

I used to live on a flaky EDGE connection and had quite a different experience: I rarely, if ever, got a SPA to load fully. Most of the time, the inital payload was too large to ever get downloaded successfully.

When you specify a plugin via URL, dprint will download and cache it for you. See: https://dprint.dev/setup/#custom-cache-directory It also allows you to auto-update, though this functionality is currently quite basic

This. I'm surprised most sentiments on HN are "super cool" rather than "scary". I guess some people prefer attention over privacy.

Ignoring the fallacy that dated design equals outdated functionality... I'd assume the opposite in regards to bugs: My assumption would be that older software has fewer bugs since, the longer the software is used, the more likely it is

Glad to hear that you prefer shell scripting, but please consider that there are many (web) devs out there who prefer JavaScript: "Many [devs] are more familiar with the Chrome DevTools console than they are with a Unix command-line pr

Using a subtree, childlist MutationObserver, you can implement a disconnectedCallback for non-custom elements. In the callback, you can clean-up any event handlers that you have added to the element yourself.

I would have expected this to do something different, like rendering the image via WebGL (so it looks like an <img>, but isn't easily downloadable).

Windows also runs Microsoft HTML Applications (HTAs) out of the box. These are useful if your script needs a GUI.

I've started writing a guide about it: https://marksweb.site/hta/ It's still very much work in progress, but maybe it helps if you wanna try developing HTAs.

On Windows, I use the built-in Microsoft HTML Applications (HTAs) to build single-file, double-clickable GUIs in JS. Using ActiveXObject from within your HTA, you can write scripts for pretty much anything on your PC. (So this isn't sh
