Loops obviously have their place, no question, but you're going to find that assigning a List to a var, and then appending to it / re-assigning it is going to generate a ton of garbage, and in general will just be slow all around.

Here's a more functional version of complete_items, if you're interested. def complete_items(...) = bin.items.flatMap((item, v) => expectedSymbol(item).map(nonterminal => grammar.nextValue(document, item.orig

Hi Clifton-- Thanks for the reply. Very thoughtful. I have a couple of points. "What we'd hoped to accomplish, and fell short on in the end, was a way for developers with non-traditional backgrounds find gainful employment."

If map performance is really an issue for you, you should look into using the parallel collections. For maps with less than 10k entries, I'm unable to see any difference between the immutable/mutable and ju.HashMap collections. Fo

Wha? In practice, we have seen much much _less_ garbage created by our Scala code. The use of objects in Scala encourages static method creation, and there's so much boilerplate Java junk that your Scala code just doesn't need.

It's incredibly difficult to find good Scala developers today, no doubt. However, it is incredibly easy to find Java developers who are curious about expanding their skillset. Those are the guys and gals who I hire, simply because it&#

I'm conflicted; on one hand, obviously protecting against the HTML sent in an e-mail is a good idea. I seriously considered having all e-mail bodies run through https://code.google.com/p/owasp-java-html-sanitizer&#

I think Play, with well-written asynchronous code, could approach the Netty/Vert.x speed. In other words, I'd be willing to trade the ease-of-use of Play for the slight speed impairment vs. writing directly to Netty/Vert.x/etc.

There are a few problems with your Play code that are causing it to be unnecessarily slow. First-- what you're really testing here is the Jackson library. A majority of the cycles used in your application are being burned in that toJson cal

Even if "considerably less than 10 seconds" means 9 seconds, that means the B-class could keep up with a 1982 Ferrari Mondial. In city driving, nobody cares about 0-60 times.

Yes, it will work. There's no magic sauce about adding whichever ORM you want; just declare it as a dependency in your build file and you're ready to go.

Play uses Ebean on the Java side of the fence. Anorm is for Scala users. Here's how to do a query for a person in Anorm: SQL("select * from person where id = {id}").on("id" -> myAgeVariable).map(row => MyPersonObject(row[String]("na
