Feature requests go here: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=363 . You can use GreaseMonkey to change the fonts on your own end. As for down votes, they're only available to members who have enough karma. (Paul claimed 20 a while ago, th

I actually have experience on both sides of this issue. My principal would not allow me to skip 3rd grade, despite my teacher's and parents' requests. On the other hand, in junior high, I was allowed to test out of three years of math. I ca

You should have to enter an explanation when you downmod something. Then the recipients won't be left confused, and it will enforce responsible use of the privilege. I feel this is a better solution to the abuse problem than only allowing d

Would somebody care to explain to me what's wrong with my comment? I'll admit it's short. Is there something more fundamentally wrong? Feeding trolls? Frankly, a belief that natural disasters only strike highly religious areas is quite stra

What happened to the footnotes? Edit: Oh, they've managed to make it into a completely different URL. I guess that's slightly more usable than the previous system, if I open that URL before I start reading, but it would really be nice if th

This looks interesting, but it doesn't seem like the content is actually available yet. Anyway, I think most perlmongers and anyone else who cares already knew perl had these capabilities.

You know, if they keep giving YouTube free advertising, they'll never kill it. Just look at cereal killers.

I would have thought it would be just the opposite. Going to school drives me bonkers. By the end of the quarter, I can't wait to stop being taught all this garbage and get back to my own studies/projects. I presume you're talking about peo

I had the same feelings about this being old news. Also, it doesn't actually tell me anything useful. I don't think having the problem solved in Erlang and functional languages is even close to enough, though. No offense, but there just are

The link above redirects me to an Associated Press page. http://news.wired.com/dynamic/stories/T/TOO_FAST_COMPUTERS?S... works for me, though. Perhaps I'll comment after I read it, but I thought I should add this for now.

Yup, file upload works in IE6 under wine, though. I used IEs4Linux, which you can get at http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page . I also use this for web development work, and it's great, besides the obvious.

I completely agree with Joel. I've done major refactoring work by making a series of minor alterations that clearly don't change anything. This approach takes a lot less time and doesn't introduce nearly as many bugs. Our svn repository is

What's the big deal with ramen? I like ramen. I have no financial troubles, and I eat it anyway. It requires no preparation, 3 minutes to cook, tastes good, and costs maybe 20 cents for a meal (including the cost of water and heat). The pro

How many people host their websites where they could handle a lot of traffic? I sure don't. Up until last year, mine was running on a 586 with 32 MB of EDO-RAM (remember that stuff?), from my parents' house. I think you'd have to stick to m
