Then the fediverse is already there. The video hosting service PeerTube uses bittorrent to distribute the video among viewers. There were some plans at one point for another project which would deal with music and would host the media on IP

Yes, but you were downloading a movie and then you'd delete it to make room for something else on your 40GB HDD. In this case it would be like you'd try to download the whole internet because you're interested in one movie.

It's also at odds with how people consume content. If you cram every social interaction a network has in a massive common distributed store (which is what using a bittorrent like protocol would entail) you have every node requiring to

I doubt "valuing virality" is the real problem. But when you're exposed to a universal network whose numbers increase every day, there are moments when it happens no matter if you want it or not. The "slashdot effect&quo

Since ActivityPub is mostly composed (75%) of immutable json payloads, they are very suitable for caching. The existing infrastructure should be more than enough.

There are other projects that support the client to server part of the specification (see my profile for an example in the FedBOX project, and from the more mainstream ones there's Pleroma AFAIR). Generally developers justify not addin

I think the justification Eugen (Mastodon's main developer) gave for not loading a user's past activities is that it would actually harm smaller instances when a user goes viral and the whole network hammers their servers for thei

I mean, Steam/linux32 is the "platform" to release games on for linux. As much as I'd like to compile random game binaries on my own machine with my own glibc that's probably never going to happen.

I also work on a link aggregator and I'm probably interested in cribbing the reddit API compatibility layer. Any interest to refactor it into an independent package, or is it tied into your own data model?

Hahah, that is probably the one lesson that ActivityPub has NOT learned from XMPP. ActivityPub can support new vocabulary through an extension mechanism based on JSON-LD, and I honestly am curious to see where serious efforts in this dire

Here's another "summary of what happened" vis-a-vis XMPP: niche protocol is still niche after big player enters and, eventually, exists the space. XMPP is doing fine, and ActivityPub will be doing fine after Meta. People cryi

This already happens, not with Meta, but with everyone having to implement Mastodon's ActivityPub implementation quirks (which there are a lot of). So for me, as a developer of a small and niche Fediverse project, nothing will change.
