In math and Haskell, sure, but this is wrong, not just pedantic. They are functions. The language docs call them functions. The keyword to create them is “function”.

Shameless plug, I wrote a snake tutorial for bevy that’s become pretty popular, and just updated it for 0.6. https://mbuffett.com/posts/bevy-snake-tutorial/

I read a ton and this is my #1 complaint about nonfiction (and sometimes fiction too). I’ve read two books recently that broke this pattern (replacing guilt by Nate Soared, and hell yeah or no by Derek Sivers). It was a huge breath of fresh

I’m not trying to avoid wasting my time so I can hustle for shiny things though. I’d just rather have spent one of my limited days on this earth not browsing through Reddit.

I’ve been a long-time user of Rocket and just dropped it recently for actix web. I needed async which is only in 0.5, but other libraries weren’t updated for 0.5. While struggling w/ something related to that, a new nightly version of

I hadn't heard of RealChess before, thanks for the link. Some of these exercises are definitely interesting. I like the idea of the attacked pieces exercise combined w/ visualization, I'd like to add an exercise like that to

Just something I've been hacking on, since I found the existing tools for visualization sort of wanting.

Just that it’s less about how good my best moves are, and more about how good my worst moves are. It’s not a benefit to be able to figure out the next 5 moves in a really complex tactical position, when most games are decided by a simple ta

Research on this seems to mostly have settled on “no, maybe some accelerated development for kids”. I just know it’s better for my brain to be thinking about chess for 2 hours than to be on Reddit for 2 hours, which is what I was spending t

I don’t have hard data to back this up, but I do think that 1200 to 1800 on lichess in six months is very solid improvement, there’s a ton of accounts that have 10x+ my playtime and are rated below. It doesn’t seem to be just a time investe

I think part of this is the slow time control, it's hard to tilt for more than a few games on rapid, since games can last up to 20 minutes. The other part is I think I was chronically under-rated, because of my ratio of studying to pla

I think from a higher level there are some interesting things, you're right that I should have gone into it a bit. One of those is that raising my ceiling of play, like challenging myself with super tough puzzles, was actually totally

Not every meaningless achievement with an unnecessary retrospective blog post needs a derisive comment about its existence, and yet here we are. Some people are interested in the content, you’re obviously not, just ignore it.

Extra pedantry: you’re of course right that 600 points is somewhat meaningless, given that it’s harder to improve in the higher ratings, but there’s nothing logarithmic about elo. A 1500 playing a 500 has the same odds as winning as a 2500

Yeah this is just as valid. I needed something to sink my teeth into, so I’ve been more interested in the improvement and learning side. The bonus is that games get more fun the better you get, until very recently I just found my own play f

Do you mean like if a mate in 2 was passed over? Seems strange to dismiss that since even great players will miss a winning position sometimes.

I have to really question how the study was conducted if only 1-2% of python errors were considered type errors. Even if the only type error you consider is None vs not None, you'd get more than that. Certainly those errors account for
