That's where Mercurial phases and publishing repositories improve UX a lot. Developers can have their forks with non-publishing repositories that indicate commits that are not in public state and can be easily edited. This is such a gr

I'd recommend looking at RhodeCode for code-review. It has few unique features like pull-requests versioning allowing partial diff between updates, todo notes. Team looked at few gerrit features and want to port it too to make code-rev

This is a known problem for a while. For example when we (RhodeCode) had an installer based on pip we actually rolled our own PYPI index. Having one you host is very easy and there are nice projects in existence that allowed that. It basica

When we went to raise money for RhodeCode which was GPL at that time, it was no issue for investors. Nowe we're AGPL and switching the license was no issue for current investors too. Also so far no questions about AGPL beeing a problem

Looking forward to next OpenSource RhodeCode release which will now support rendering jupyter notebooks. It'll be second to Github source code management with Jupyter support.

Our team uses Mercurial for exactly the same thing, a clean linear history, with features like phases, and histedit it's very easy to achieve and works great. We use RhodeCode to manage pull requests for Mercurial. This has also a feat

It would be great to add Fossil, as another backend to RhodeCode VCSServer that now supports git, Mercurial and SVN. It's also written in python so it should be not so hard.

It's a shame they didn't pick a solution like RhodeCode(which is written in Python) at that point. Afair it was because at the time decision was beeing made it wasn't open source, as it is now.
