For crouton, which is still tied to chromeos, absolutely not. All that's required is developer mode enabled. For a full, clean linux install, it varies device to device, but is in general a bit more of a pain. There's a full list

As a student, they are invaluable for textbooks. I hate lugging them around to the classes that might need them, or to collaborate with others. I throw many of my textbooks onto my old iPad, and I see many people on my campus with some sort
