I didn't downvote but would like to comment either way. I think this is exactly something the EU should be doing. The EU is largely about breaking the borders between all these smaller countries and making trade and travel between thes

Linking to the file from a popular HN thread will likely only worsen the bandwidth issues for the owner :-). Perhaps link to the Github version instead, which is here: https://github.com/gdsmith/jquery.easing

Interesting point! As far as I know we've never run into this issue. We are in The Netherlands, so perhaps that makes it easier. However, were this ever to become an issue with a particular candidate, I'm sure we are flexible enough to work

We are a small startup, currently with 11 people. You are right about the scaling issue, I suppose our approach would be more difficult in a large organisation. But why would we only be able to hire unemployed people or new grads? I joined

Yes, people who are currently employed will have to take a few days off for this. As we're in The Netherlands that is usually no problem. One of the reasons we pay people for these two days is to compensate them for the two days off they'll

Exactly! This is why we, at my job, only hire software engineers after a (paid) two-day test period in which they actually build some new feature on one of our products. Nothing too fancy but interesting enough for them to be a challenge an

I have quite a bit of devops experience myself, especially on Amazon Web Services and their CloudFormation service combined with Chef. I would be very interested in a blog post (or a series, go nuts!) and I'm considering doing a series of w

On my non-retina MacBook the newsletter signup bar takes up about 1/3 of the screen real estate on that page. Seems a bit ironic for something that teaches us about a good UI...

Nice! I really like the minimalistic GUI of the app. In addition to joren's comment below it would be great if Vim/Gmail navigation key bindings (or just configurable navigation key bindings) would be available. Navigation with j/k, marking

If you are okay with working on bare metal (i.e. no virtualization out of the box) than Hetzner (www.hetzner.de) is a very interesting partner. My experience with them is very good. Ex-colleagues are also happy with them.

We use AWS (and with great satisfaction) because it provides a full offering. We don't just need a bunch of servers, we also need databases, one or more queues, backup storage, caching and so forth. AWS provides all of these services, offer

I found out that the page listens to j/k just as in Vim. However, it seems the scroll directions are inverted from Vim; j goes up and k goes down.

I think the main reason for this is that strange things can happen when you're passing marshalled objects around. For instance, say that your application has just created an Email object which has a "title" attribute, and it has been marsha

I second this. Recurring credit card payments are virtually impossible in the EU at the moment, and the existing options (e.g. PayPal) suck or are too expensive.

I love how Pinboard deals with this issue: site remains online (albeit with limited abilities), all data is secured and backed up, users are encouraged to use the export tool if they feel the need and there are status updates on Twitter. Ke

I would say: before forcing yourself into a profession or into activities that you think are good for you, try to find out what you actually like doing. Nothing is as devastating as having a job that you're not enthusiastic about and, v
