strcat is right here. Purism designs and markets their devices, effectively, to cater to a crowd that believes that devices with actual security are inherently evil, because they do not understand it. You can have better security with use

It's not the secure enclave thing. These aren't SSDs. These are raw storage modules. The SSD controller is built into the M1/T2. You are upgrading the raw storage behind a single, global SSD. Of course when you change the lay

Let's just say I've talked with people who have worked with him on comma.ai and... I heard his cars would be driving into everything if it were just his code running them without all the safety features the folks around him added.

That's implied in how page tables work. If your pages are 16K then all your page levels are going to shift up two bits compared to 4K. Again, these aren't 16K "huge pages", that'd be nice. This is changing the basel

That's the issue: 16K pages never exist alongside 4K pages in the same address space half. The CPU has two mode flags, for kernel and userspace respectively. There is no way to mix modes within the same address space half. And changing

No, you can't really save/restore the hardware context to pull this off. You'd need actual virtual devices for ~everything at some level. I won't go as far as saying it's impossible a priori, but it'd be a huge

It is completely different from hugepages. Hugepages exist alongside normal pages.

Specifically, things on that list are things that work already, but are disabled or not merged into our release kernels yet because they aren't quite ready for end users. So they "work" already, just not in the kernel package

Virtualization is working on Linux, but the macOS story is not that. We run macOS inside a custom VM hypervisor I wrote, on bar metal, passing through almost all the hardware. macOS is unlikely to run inside a VM on Linux any time soon, bec

It's probably based on AWDL, same as AirDrop. So yes, that's a proprietary peer-to-peer protocol that ignores your home network.

The raw image support has nothing to do with silicon bring-up. That is an option for a userspace tool running in macOS recovery mode. At that point you're well past silicon bring-up. I don't know why people keep conflating those t

You realize you're linking me my own tweet, right? [1] isn't cutting corners, it's just not optimizing a use case that didn't matter for iOS devices, and not realizing it to fix it when bringing that controller to Macs.

alx.sh serves you this script: https://github.com/AsahiLinux/asahi-installer/blob/main/scri... It's proxied to avoid requiring users to use curl -L, otherwise I'd just have made it redirect.

That's not the same thing. Huge pages are in addition to standard pages. Being in 16K mode means no 4K pages. It's a global switch. Linux can't handle that, the baseline page size is set at compile time and affects a ton of

Most of that is leaving enough space for macOS updates not to break. The minimal image requires 8GB of actual space by default, 3GB for boot stuff related to macOS and a default minimum 5GB root partition. I can actually go lower there, but

I would expect the people already daily-driving ARM Linux laptops with GPUs that run slower than software rendering on M1s to be perfectly happy with the current state of affairs. This is not to say GPU support is a long way away; it isn&

It's not only the "console effect" for the OS though. It's the vertical integration of the hardware to begin with. It's just better than x86 platforms because Apple control everything and can make sure it works

Mac Studio isn't supported yet, but I expect bring-up to take a day or two once mine arrives! Some upstream kernel folks are already using Apple Silicon machines for development (to compile x86 kernels even) because they're faster

Linux is the world's most popular OS running on mobile devices with small batteries. I'd say x86 platforms have not always been the best at that :-)

Chadmed is working on the processing, and he already thinks he can get better results than macOS. The other day he measured the response with a calibration mic so we can compute good correction coefficients.

Recurring meetings cannot be expressed as timestamps (unless you want all the humans to hate you). The recurrence has to be expressed in terms of local time (and date/day of week) in some (ideally per-event) timezone.
