On the other hand, does an IDE add that much value to python and clojure? For Java, I can see the benefits, but given that these scripting languages are much more lightweight, that's why emacs/vim do alright for them?

Are direct shell commands that useful...? I either have a shell running in emacs or in a separate terminal that I can quickly switch to. I've heard about the parallel processing tools, but sounds like I'm doing alright with emacs.

Thanks for the response. I primarily program with python for shell scripting/text processing, or data analysis/simulation with numpy/scipy/pandas. I do a lot of exploration, I rarely ever type anything directly in the RE

True. In an organization with enough people, it's often more efficient to specialize (e.g., into workers and managers). I would say that the quoted statement is not an entirely fair characterization of managers (PIs) in academia though
