I use a homegrown web app that uses GnuCash behind the scenes via a Python Flask app. Works just well enough that I don't have to open GnuCash anymore. You can try it here if interested: https://demo.checkyour.finance Sourc

I'm an avid user of GnuCash. Last I checked, their mobile app was basically abandoned (around 2018), and it had no way to use a SQL DB, even though the desktop can use SQLite3, MySQL, and Postgres [1]. So there was no easy way to use d

I was hoping this article was going to be about TV show syndication. Jerry Seinfeld was worth nearly one billion dollars last time I checked, nearly all from royalties paid out for reruns of the show. How the hell did broadcast networks lik

Honestly, that sounds like it's still the Gestalt principles at work. Did you read the link I posted about luminance? The person who made that art seems to have a keen eye for color design. The colors are chosen in such a way that the

There are a lot of answers here that suggest the colors have something to do with it. I think that is true, but no one has suggested what I think it is overall: the Gestalt Principles[0] in action. The Gestalt Principles are from cognitive

I created a web app for doing personal accounting with GnuCash files [1]. The mobile app for GnuCash was abandoned around 2018 from what I can tell, and it never had synchronization, so you couldn't easily use it on both mobile and des

If you're looking for a refresher that outlines Python language fundamentals, I recommend "Introducing Python, 2nd Edition" (2019) by Bill Lubanovic [0]. Another really cool introduction that's filled with intermediate t

I'm genuinely rooting for Jellyfin to overtake Plex in functionality and popularity; someone needs to. Plex isn't even fully FLOSS. That said, I don't actually like Jellyfin, and I wish it weren't implemented in such a W

I'm fully in favor of replacing shell scripts with Python3 scripts wherever possible. In fact that's part of my job. That being said, the author of this article is using confusing / wrong terminology to discuss bash. This art

Seriously, it's less a synopsis and more a rewording of the same article! They might as well have just linked to Moxie Marlinspike's article as the whole body of their own article.

If you're not opposed to self-hosting, I've had some good experiences running Matrix Synapse to keep in touch with friends. I can't speak to content moderation, but managing the service has been really nice so far.

I did a CTRL + F for “docker” and “container” and surprisingly didn’t see any hits in the first page of comments. I’ve found it’s a lot easier to just make a single docker image of my favorite OS, load it with my dotfiles, vim plugins, etc.
