It is usually said that the English built the first railways in France and that they built them so that trains drive left, out of habit.

From my experience (I have no data), it seems that many of them use the same source for coffee: http://www.cafesrichard.fr/services-chr-nos-produits-4.html (and this is rather cheap coffee)

"Best" always depends on your criteria. Very often, the standard library is a "good but not best" solution from a pure performance or features point of view. However, it often wins for ease of deployment (nothing to inst

There are no "review fees" (we review papers for free) and most editors (who select reviewers and select the papers) are not paid. So, basically, the cost is the cost of a website. At any rate, to 'disrupt' conventional

Touch-typing is more about freeing your mind from the keyboard than been fast. I see my students (who do not touch type at all) struggling with their problem _and_ using a lot of their concentration / "cognitive power" to sea

It is not really linked to boost, but meta-programming make many things many difficult for an IDE (whatever the IDE is). For instance, I could have this class: template<typename X> struct Test { void test(const X& x) { t

I agree: this is not C/C++ IDE, this is a C IDE (and maybe a "C-with-classes" IDE). None of these emacs packages (e.g. CEDET) handle modern C++ well (heavy use of generic programming, boost, c++-11 features, etc.). Even inden

I fully agree, especially for the text (it is hard to write with a mouse!). In addition, basic shapes like line/rectangle/circle would be welcomed (I am terrible at drawing a circle with a mouse).

It's true that there is no equivalent of the Oxford comma in many languages (e.g., in French, you should not use it). The comma is a trap for non-native writers! ;)

I was curious to know how modern C++ would compare. Here is a version (not 100% sure about the result because I was not 100% sure of the meaning of some of the numpy constructs when applied to matrixes). http://chronos.isir.upmc.

I fully agree with the critics about the p-values, but what are the best alternatives to analyze and compare data? Most of the time, scientists have to compare the outcome of treatment 1 versus treatment 2; how should they do it "prope

CS prof. here. We don't want to teach "tools" (e.g. IDE) because they are always changing. There is no point is knowing how to set up an IDE when the IDE will have a different GUI before the student graduates. We teach"u

That's not the question. The question should be: what did you learn? I don't think I learned anything new in Robinson's talk. I enjoyed the talk in the same way as I can enjoy a good Holywood movie, but I didn't learn an

To my opinion, the main purpose of teaching mathematics is to teach abstraction and abstract reasoning... It is not to teach how to balance a checkbook!
