Keep in mind a lot of .net applications will run on x86 or arm with no effort by the developer, ie no "simply recompile your application" either, it will just run on either platform. But you're right that they're exposed with no application

the dev tools seem to be available for x64 only, and I'm pretty sure Virtual PC will only host a 32bit o/s? in the other thread someone mentioned vmware panics when booting win8, but parallels works ok. I'm going to give virtualbox a shot

Yeah I'm keen to try it out when I get home tonight but don't exactly want to hose my home machine, hoping vmware player 64bit will play nicely with win8, if no one else has tried it by tonight I'll let you know how I went
