What you think is "cruft" might be of important usage to others. Please don't be so fast to judge. You don't know content usage patterns around the world.

Start with smaller bugs & try to fix them. Bugs help you to focus your understanding on very small parts of code/paths. This helps in time spent vs output vs confidence.

Is there any study which tells how useful are high contrast things for kids? When my son uses my mobile phone (which he knows how to turn on, off, unlock) - I generally turn brightness very low. This is in stark contrast to red/white :

Script the build & make such tiny apps for all popular permission hogging apps with websites. Then cross-promote them within your app. This is what I would do :)
