Would you exclude compiler/assembler developers ? Are they not using the bare chip capabilities? Is assembly an abstraction ?

Note that this computer was out in 1991, when Windows 3.0 was 1 year old. In fact I had an Amstrad 2086 (a 8086 with VGA) that included windows 2.0 whereas pc1512 and1640 included gem plus. I think this interface was not meant to replace th

I'd much rather have a performance oriented blog post have at least a few performance data points (even if put into context): simple vs fast ... but by how much ?

My bad of course those are Lucasfilm. However, I was referring to late adventure point and clicks, unlike kq1 from 84: let's take lucasfilm games post 93, including grim fandango or full throttle, those do not seem to fit your descript

You cannot remove an unused variable, you just dont refer to a stack place or register with it. Removing a variable would modify your source code. The compiler can only make you do it by pretending it refuses to understand it.

Well, okayish if by "tech" you mean mobile-internet-client-side software tech (Maybe, I don't work in it anymore). Technology also applies for vastly broader fields (which I wont enumerate here).

Functions can be inlined by the compiler if it thinks it's an issue. I think it's rather a question of readability : sometimes if a process involves a long series of step I like to be able to read them linearly rather than jumping
