I've began to think of late that this may be the most prevalent market inefficiency in the world. Hiring people you know without due process is a big reason for the incompetence that creeps into companies after a while. This means that cons

That's a rather off-colour reply, it has to be said, sir. First you resort to an absurd comparison in a poor attempt at snark, then you claim that Mark Pincus and Andrew Mason are severely pained by their lacklustre performance on the publi

I wonder what people who strike it rich on vaporware tell their children when asked what they did to make money? I mean what does Mark Cuban tell his kids? "I built this website and it was shut down, but I'm bloody rich anyways, so..." I me

That's odd. I recall several channel owners claiming million dollar revenues, eg. Jason Njorku from irokotv claimed 1m in annual revenue on this channel for Nigerian movies: http://www.youtube.com/user/NollywoodLove The TechCrunch article

Note that syndication is very popular with the top channels, so you have top creators like RWJ owning 3 of the top 1000 channels, VEVO owning more than 50, same with machinima.com, Demand Media and others which I might have missed. That ske

Great discussion. It's really hard to get an objective discussion about Zynga around these parts. Looking from personal experience with casinos, my gut instinct tells me they are definitely dangerous, but the one thing that tempts me to pla

I believe the main reason Facebook has been negligent on mobile is because of Opera Mini. It has handed Facebook a huge lifeline in mobile. Its been the only bearable way to use the mobile site since Facebook's inception, and chances are it

One golden rule of business is to commoditize your complements, to kill off any competition they might pose. CPM display ads are complementary to search ads, hence Google commoditized them by making AdSense primarily CPC. It will be extreme

The thing that shocks me the most about this whole situation is how hackers also bought into the hype about potential revenues. Any forum administrator could tell you that running an ad-supported social network is a not such a great busines

I think that's been a big problem with this stock: people using wrong comparables. Facebook's product is much more similar to Yahoo/AOL than Google.

Acqui-hires seem to me like a Silicon valley thing. I have not heard of them being done anywhere else. Where I come from, if your product is in decline and you have a talented, well-known team, prepare to get poached. Acqui-hires seem like

I think this is the problem with the "product first, business later" approach that's dogma in Silicon Valley. People get used to such an extreme user/developer-centric experience that when the time comes for making some profit, it seems abs

I've found in my experience that gatekeepers to any system will always bubble up. It's almost evolutionary that someone controls the flow of things. The most you can hope for is that the gatekeeper be good-hearted and neutral.

The Samwer bros are probably building to sell to Stripe, so they're using credit cards for Paymill to easily integrate into Stripe when that time comes.

Not really. The Samwer brothers may not be innovators, but they are problem solvers. They solve the very huge problem of internationalisation. Zynga doesn't solve anyone's problems. They just aim to kill/leech off competitors.

I think you're confusing users with customers. In the ad business those are two completely different things. FB may be delightful for users, but it's pretty 'meh' for advertisers.

Classic mental mistake of the disrupted. China have come from making pathetic, health-hazard goods, to now making 'good enough' products, and it won't be long before they are making Apple-quality stuff.
