I was also going to bring up the Dark Forest - but it doesn't answer the question of the Cylon Spawn. The Cylon Spawn can be visible without revealing the source of the spawn (which was the issue in the Dark Forest).

There used to be an organization called Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility CPSR. It grew out of Xerox Parc. I just looked at their web site and they don't seem as active anymore.

This is too bad. There used to be a much greater cross pollination between the sciences and humanities. One of the most interesting discussion about the 1st (not 2nd) law of thermodynamics came from one of my philosophy classes.

These are all old books. The modern trend seems to be gender is an afterthought. The main character in the Ancillary series has difficulty distinguishing men from women.

There is a difference between urban sprawl and wilderness. Wilderness is good, urban sprawl is bad. We should focus on high density housing around transit hubs and then build more transit hubs. We should focus on livability of the high dens

This is just a tiny nit - but slavery was actually sanctioned at the federal level through the Fugitive Slave Law. This was one of the events that led to the Civil War - since the northern states suddenly had to enforce southern slave laws.

I am saying the opposite. I suspect we are on the same side even if we have an opposite opinion. I care more about California right now than I care about federal politics - which is currently toxic. California is currently strong enough to

I grew up in Northern California. The original movements to split the state came from the water wars in the early and mid 20th century. In the early 20th century the Los Angeles water district took water from Owens Valley under suspicious c

I am suspicious of this statistic since it is only a measure of racial purity. At some point we need to give up on this measure since it originally meant just a drop of blood is enough to be non-white. During slave days 15/16 white was

So - prior art is no longer good enough? I was at Xerox when they were fighting a patent on their ideas. At that point in time all you had to do was prove prior art on the idea. Xerox used their notes during software development plus the co

I don't know. The county was reviewing composting toilets in 2013. I don't know the outcome.

The site prep was normal for any house. The biggest change was in septic system requirements. Septic systems cost three times as much as they did a few years ago because we have to have an active system with a fan and they have to have life

We just built a "hybrid" house in Santa Cruz county. We picked the default design and stuck to it. We had to make a few changes to get through the planning department. The biggest issue was not at the building level - but rather e

I talked to the flex team a couple of years ago - and they did not think this was possible. I wonder how complete it is. At the time they said though Actionscript claims to be ECMAScript it is far from Javascript in very fundamental concept
