Yes. You also have a much better chance of getting broke with your own company than getting a six fig salary at an existing company - so at the end it is just basic risk management.

Somehow over the last 10/20 years, the notion of "rich" has had a much bigger inflation than the rest of the world, this is particularly true in the US. If your definition of "rich" is not needing a paycheck, then 2M with 2% interests over

In big companies, talented people leave programming to do architecture and project lead - you're likely to find these guys in teams that are bound to executives and senior managers. If you work for a big comp, get a clear idea of what role

Yes, you are right. Good insight, thanks. On the same line, my comment that Skype was a private investment also isn't true, because MSFT is a public company.

This may be a private tech bubble though. To me it don't seems like tech stocks are too inflated compared to the revenues we can see. Facebook may be overvalued, the Skype buy was very expensive, VCs invest like crazy, but all of that is pr

Yes. I know a bit (not much) around the principle of distributed soc nets. I have a diaspora account, but not much is happening there, partly because they are very few features (no chats, no photo app...). This system is interesting, but ma

What I am missing in this discussion: how do we develop a system that is not spying that way? Let's propose and find ideas.

Interesting. In Germany, the law states that taxes can't be bound to a certain goal. Taxes all go to a big budget basket, which is then allocated by the year budget. It means that the oil tax can finance school, military, or anything.

Any other similar projects that get more traction maybe? Diaspora has turned out to be a failure, probably we should forget it (oh wait, already done), and move on.

You cannot export your "friends" to import them in another network, that is right. Still the "download your data" function in Facebook is the best I've ever seen. Produces a zip with plain HTML, it's just so easy to navigate, review, print,

In communication courses, I learned that a rule of feedback is that the receiver is allowed to refuse it, which actually makes sense as feedback is quite subjective. I don't know if that is specifically German (Wikipedia tends into that dir

My bank has a iOS app where the iOS part is basically a browser + an icon, the rest is all an HTTPS web app. So actually, web apps are still possible. It goes in the sense of Apple not to emphasize the technology behind it, rather emphasize

You're so right. A bubble accepts exceptions. Google and Amazon survived the tech bubble, Paulson made lots of money with the 2008 crash, etc. Harvard will probably stay Harvard even with the bubble explodes. But the other 99% overprised co

I have nothing to prove it, but I heard many times at least from former version that Firebug was quite memory hungry, thus slowing Firefox after many hours of use. I may be wrong.

Not only the cable issue... The most un-durable design from Apple in my opinion is the unchangeable battery for iPod, iPhones and iPads.

I've met some guys who were pretty fit in encryption topics / key management etc on whole corporations. And it actually works, so you rarely hear about that. Quite some skills are needed to master that actually.

I agree with you. It seems to me that having a startup currently is the new making a rock band. A few get super rich, many makes a simple living or side living from it, and many just fail miserably. It's life... They could all just do stand

UX specialists and UI architects/designers discuss things like thickness of lines. Also don't discount the sheer size of their website, making "simple" changes a whole different thing than on a private small website. You also forget testers

Insurance creates value, and so do banks. The problem really begins when the banks try to get more revenue than the value they can possibly generate. That's when it goes into bubbles and finally breaks. Insurance has its risks also, but the

The cost of fixing bugs is correlated with the value your software provides. If you write any software that not much people are using and relying on it (I mean, relying on it to do their job, manage their bank account, their customers...),

Right... Renewables + energy savings. It is not that hard to save 15% energy. And it is such a magic field for startups currently. I don't understand why the startup crowd here isn't already working on making nuclear energy unneeded.
