I realise this comes across as a sarcastic defence of ads. It's sincere - I don't like ads but I want everything the provide.

Yeah I want my cake and to eat it too. I get annoyed when ads are irrelevant to me, and I get creeped out when they are too relevant. I want to be able to browse the internet for free, where the sites have a sustainable business model and

That's quite close to the plot of Memento.

They very much do. There's an Australian streaming service called Stan that bought the rights to the English Premier League this year. They post highlights videos to YouTube. Every single video they post is full of comments about how s

I think you have to start a step back from cars: the people buying them. At least where I live having a large (and getting larger) 4wd seems to be a source of identity for them, and integral to their lifestyle.

I'm in a tiny part of the film industry. Bigger clients lend us licenses to Aspera and FileCatalyst when receiving files from them, but for our own trans-oceanic transfers I dug up an ancient program called Tsunami UDP and fixed it up

But the top of their game includes them make things up and getting things wrong. They always give their best, but they always include mistakes. It's a different trust proposition to a human.

Yes, the options presented were overpay for something or roll your own. Could you not try to find a better alternative first?

It depends what you mean by "best players". Real Madrid have twice tried to just buy "Galacticos" - the generally-recognised superstar players - and cram them all into the same team, regardless of what position they were

I recommend turning on subtitles for Tree of Life. There's a lot of random whispered voice-overs, and without subs you'll have no idea who is speaking, let alone what they are saying.

Part of the reason offering suggestions is 'wrong' is because it implies that they haven't tried to think of solutions to their problem. You are unwittingly implying that you are smarter than they are, even if that is not you

I value this comment even though I don't really agree about how useful AI is. I recognise in myself that my aversion to AI is at least partly driven by fear of it taking my job.

It's a bit weird to me that AoE 2 is the most popular of that series, considering how much more streamlined and balanced Age of Mythology is. For example, getting to the 3rd age in AoE 2 ASAP is basically mandatory, but in AoM you can

The Matrix already has quite an info dump when he joins the real world that halts most of the momentum (on a re-watch, at least). I would not want even more of that.

It depends. TFA's Good Will Hunting example is good storytelling, because the whole point is that Will was not ready to hear that direct conversation. In fact, Ben Affleck's character basically says that to him at the end of the

The Nebula apps are pretty bad. Vimeo white label has issues but the app experience is much better than whomever Nebula are using. One reason Vimeo is a good deal is that they charge for video transcoding by the minute, not by the file size

I'll give you leap seconds, but at least in Python historical timezone changes are recorded in the datetime library, so the timezone at any particular time in the past has the timezone offset that was active then.
112.
by magarnicle 1y ago
Which is to say I wish cron had the TZ variable that Jenkins uses in it's scheduling system. And the H value to easily spread multiple jobs over the hour/day/month etc.
113.
by magarnicle 1y ago
The problem is not so much which timezone you pick, the problem is that cron uses 'naive' datetimes. If the timezone is explicit then you don't have duplicate hours because one is 02:00 and one is 02:00DST. And then you can t

Syncthing is very much not about having a centralised source of truth. It gives you options about how things sync - I usually start very paranoid when I set up a sync folder and store all versions of a file if the files are only small, but
