Your compiler probably has a built-in method to achieve the equivalent of offsetof without invoking undefined behavior. GCC has __builtin_offsetof: https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Offsetof.html

Actually, I was just wondering today how Cyberduck managed to be so sluggish on my computer. They've certainly gotten the look and feel right, because I didn't realize it was a Java application, but it is pretty sluggish, at least on my mac

I only have a tiny bike-shedding comment: I'd expect the arguments of the map-function in the example on page 3 to be the other way around. The 'grades' argument gets pushed down several lines in the current form.

By "business data" they probably mean "fixed format record datasets" which is COBOL's native format. Processing fixed format records (preferably one at a time) is the only thing COBOL is somewhat skilled at, though.
