From what I've seen, this is common, and to an extent, understandable too: a company does not want its employees to use the knowledge they gained at work in (profitable) side-projects. Your best bet is to talk with the company and get a wri

I wouldn't accept, for a multitude of reasons, ranging from not liking google, through no willingness to move, to loving my current job. Google might be hot, and can be an amazing place to work at, if you're the kind of person who prefers t

Sadly, mathematically proving that it does what the spec says does not necessarily mean that it's not vulnerable. The spec can be wrong too. Or the compiler. Or both. Nevertheless, it's very interesting.

Hasn't this been posted 5 days ago already? Though, at that time, the link was to the index of the site, now it's to the specific post. (ref: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2112156 )

The title of the website filled with keywords, making no sense at all isn't all that reassuring either. The colorset also makes half the site unreadable. That, and all of the above: no thanks.

None of the above. My proxy does my filtering, it's easier to do that than pulling down a hosts file on every computer I use, and updating all of them each time I update the list.

I don't have a degree, yet, I never found it an issue to get a job. How? I had my name all over the internet, patches, bug reports and quality code. In most cases, that weighted a lot more than any degree I could've achieved.

It takes about 10 minutes to download a VPN client (or, you could get one on CD or USB drive or whatever, from a trusted source, etc). Depending on the complexity of the VPN, it takes around an hour tops to make it work. And a few minutes t

When I'm connecting to the remote end of my VPN, I'm doing so on an encrypted connection, checking the certificate. If the certificate has a mismatch, then the connection stops, and the VPN doesn't build up. Even if my ISP or government wou

Yep, that was my interpretation of the question too. But I wouldn't have put down the document or key/value stores so harshly, since they do have their uses, even outside of high-scalability scenarios. As for BerkeleyDB and the rest: I'm no

The website's colors hurt my eyes, the uneven height of strifes are also fairly annoying. However, the idea sounds interesting, and since it's on github, and I don't have to visit the website ever again, I'll give it a try! If it does work

I respectfully disagree: there's plenty of room for NoSQL, even if your users are next to none. For example, at times, it is just more convenient to store data in a schema-less database (while still being able to query said data relatively

You can't really compare Python to RoR, as one's a language, the other is a framework. It's either Ruby <-> Python, or RoR <-> one of the python frameworks (probably Django). Pesonally, I'd go with Python & Django, becau

When I first learned programming (at the age of 6), I sat down with my father, he told me what we will do: a dancing man, and we did just that, in C+4 Basic. Looking back, commodore basic was a very good first choice, because I didn't need

First of all, 14 million isn't all that much. Consider the traffic Wikipedia serves, the vast amount of content it is storing, that's not going to be cheap. Second, I'd rather have Jimmy Wales' face staring at me once a year, than random ad

I was under the impression that Ruby people prefer their gems over distros packaging those same things. Judging by the stance a lot of rubists took against Debian and Ubuntu, it would be a safe bet to say that a distro you describe cannot r

I want derived works to remain GPL, yes. Furthermore, if say, I release something under the 2-clause BSD license, and hand over maintainership, the new maintainer can make any new versions closed source, since the BSD license permits that.

I do wonder where Linus Torvalds would fit. Terran? While getting shit done is usually fine with him, he also has a good sense of elegance and has been seen being vocal about code that looked bad. Zerg? Yeah, no. Protoss? While Linus' skill

Using something written in a language you hate is not going to do any good in the long run. I'd stick with Django, and just not use the ORM and the templating system: there's plenty of Django left, even if you remove those two parts.
