A project made up of 12 million lines of code, and Google can give it away for free. Mind boggling. There's not many can do that.

Why turn linkable, copy pasteable, screen readable HTML into an inscrutible image? Maybe they could make embedding simpler, but I think there are betterr options than turning it into an image.

Are they famous for that? I have never heard stories of how they deal with paying customers, but then, I don't think I know any paying customers of Google. No snark intended, I'm really curious to hear.

The hardware lock in is the much less interesting of the two lock ins you mention. Regardless of which platform you use, you are locking yourself to the software much more than to the hardware.

Google open sources things when it is beneficial to them to do so, or when it is not very central to their business strategy. Every time an oem takes the android source and makes it run on a new device, they are doing Google a favor, and mi

re: Zanga My impression is that they are making use of the user data they are able to collect when people start using the app. Is ther any evidence that they are selling that data or otherwise doing something uncouth with it?

I think that is a fair reason for the current state of Mac applications, as theirs is a cultured built over many years between a relatively small number of people. But the iPhone has brought a hoard of developers who are new to the platform

I'm a little confused as to what has actually changed here. Did they just stop running things off their own machines and start paying someone else to host the site?

"No company — no matter how big or how creative — should dictate what you can create, how you create it, or what you can experience on the web." That argument seems to apply to Adobe more easily than it applies to Apple.

I find it interesting that it is Verizon who is working with Google on this. As if whoever making the hardware really doesn't matter. Why wouldn't it be HTC or Dell or someone who is working with Google on this? Does any other carrier take

I agree with you. But even so, wouldn't a lot of people (everyone using firefox/Opera) then be unable to use youtube? When you have such an amazingly high profile site that is incompatible with major browsers, isn't that a bad thing? I gues

I never said that the spec should not specify a video codec, I was just trying to set the record straight. In fact, I didn't claim anything about the spec at all, I just summarized some of Hixie's points. If you aren't satisfied with what I

I think you could throw Google's name on the list there as well. Ian Hixie says: >Google ships both H.264 and Theora support in Chrome; YouTube only >supports H.264, and is unlikely to use Theora until the codec improves >subs

Right, that's why I think that the total number of books sold, not the number per device, would be an interesting number to compare. Are there more books being bought for the Kindle or for the iPad? What does that graph look like?

I have yet to go to a 3D movie where I felt 3D really added to the experience. Avatar came close, and there were times when it was really cool, but there were also times when I turned my head or something didn't line up right and 3D took me
