I'm pretty sure I had one of Sierra's King Quest games on a series of 12 disks (though they might have been 5.25" 512kb floppies). You'd walk from one screen to another and be met with "Please insert disk 8 of 12&qu

Actually, yes. I haven't done it with books, but there are a few shows I've rewatched. Usually it's something I enjoy having on in the background while I do other things, similar to having background music. It started as me j

As others have pointed out, I don't think we have all the right data to really make conclusions, especially in a historical context here. But if the trend is exactly what the title is implying, I wonder if social networks are a contrib

There are much worse ways to lose hours than in Wikipedia. A lot of my general knowledge comes from constantly looking up topics I encounter on Wikipedia. Try a new dish at a restaurant? I look it up. Interesting origin story and nutritio

Instead of thinking of Linux for non-technical users, I think you can actually segment non-technical users into people who use a computer and people who use a browser. People who just use a browser for virtually everything (i.e. people who

Though as we recently learned, it's considered sufficiently "fringe" by a big chunk of the development community that it's not that big a deal to drop support for it. (Not to imply IBM couldn't be sponsoring develop

I think there's a pretty fundamental difference between "allowing farms to police themselves" and actually prohibiting them from doing voluntary testing for diseases. I would compare it to the difference between eliminating a

Do security fixes break general usage of stable APIs often? That is not my experience. I mean that's the whole point of semantic versioning: you should be able follow a maintenance release line (or even a minor release line) without an

Huh - are DLL's not a thing anymore? IMO the best reason to use shared libraries has always been cases where updates are likely critical and there's a well-defined interface that is unlikely to have breaking changes. Like libssl.

Yeah and that's the kind of thing I would hope really does become more normal virtually everywhere. Especially when a job is so easily done remotely most of the time, it should be very low cost for people to be a more available parent

I've always been mystified by the state of remote work at Google, because I understood that they pushed pretty hard on being in the office. And yet I've had many video conference calls with various teams at Google over the last 8

I had already worked remotely for years and loved it. On average, I would travel to the office every 2-3 months. The trips were always a fun change of scenery (other than dealing with the TSA) and often found that all the face time and in-p
