That makes sense. I guess I was hung up on “a few light seconds” since that’s more like, what, 5-10 minutes per hop?

At their maximum separation, Mars & Earth are about 20 minutes apart. If we had 10 satellite data centers all in perfect alignment (disregarding the sun, which obviously makes a hash out of things) they'd still each be 2 minutes ap

I wrote one in Erlang years ago for Riak’s time series implementation. I don’t remember all of the motivations, but most of all I wanted the ability to encode incomplete date/time objects. https://github.com/macintux&#x

But carpeting that distance across the entire volume of space between the planets with data centers every few light-seconds apart seems ambitious. A hundred or more data centers in space? > throw tons of datacenter and compute that'

You reminded me that a couple of jobs ago (I tend to stay with jobs for a long time) we discovered that a local paging tower had failed because one of our techs could not receive pages at home. Our assumption was that we were basically the

The comment was a few light-seconds. That's a lot of hops to Mars to fill to sustain that coverage year-round.

How would that work to, say, Mars? Have satellites filling many, many orbits between the two planets?

For now. There's a pretty decent chance that AccuWeather is discontinuing this in anticipation that the NWS is going to be sabotaged. Update: https://gizmodo.com/republicans-project-2025-would-end-free-...

Yes. When writing a Perl script, there's literally zero friction to using regular expressions because they're baked in. I just type what I want to run. When writing a Python script, I realize I want a regular expression, and I hav

Have you worked with COBOL? My understanding is that the language itself isn't the real problem. Mainframes, control languages: everything around COBOL is very different from most Windows/UNIX people have experienced.

For me it's mainly about intent/unearned confidence. If someone is speculating about how such a problem might be solved while not trying to conceal their lack of direct experience, I'm fine with it, but not everyone is. If so
