My JavaScript experience was similar. I blame it on the name, stupid as that sounds, because the first thought of a newbie is likely to be 'Oh, this is like Java'. As JavaScript syntax is similar to Java at a glance, this leads one to try a

Although I agree that Stack[Overflow|Exchange] will never been a mainstream site, I think there's an important difference in that SO is very useful to the community that it does support. They've really nailed the technical question 'probl

Well, that's the point. Take away the weasel word 'magic', and saying that humans are doing what a Turing machine can do is the same thing as saying they're algorithmically representable. Turing machines are not handed down to us by God;

Not really. The idea behind hard AI is that you can have one algorithm that can solve general problems, not lots of different algorithms to solve specific problems. Take IBM's research as an example. Deep Blue is very good at solving chess

Well, maybe you went to different classes than I did, but none of those things you mentioned would ever have been considered hard AI as I was taught it. Hard AI == generalised problem solving (or as wikipedia puts it, 'the intelligence of a

I don't like C++ as a language AT ALL, but the fact is, for cross-platform native app development, it's the only game in town unless you want to write C. Do you want your app (or some part of your app) to run on Windows/OSX/iOS/Android/Linu

My big problem with Kurzweil's singularity is the massive handwaving he does between 'computers are getting exponentially faster' and 'AI will arise'. This depends on the assumption that 'intelligence' (and nobody can really agree on what t

They've said that apps users will definitely be included, and that they're 'working on it', but it would be nice to have an idea of timescale: will it be a couple of weeks of bug fixing (in which case I'll wait), or will we have to wait for

You couldn't have a better demonstration of why competition is good. I stick with FF because I prefer the interface, but there's no question that all web browsers have become much better since Chrome's introduction. And if you're willing to

Agree 100% - and I would bet that the same A/B testing would show that those users who DO care about rounded corners, text shadows et al are using Chrome/FF/Safari.

Hooray! I prefer FF's interface to Chrome or Safari, but it gets up to 6-700MB RAM usage on my Mac (with 'only' 2GB RAM) so I find I have to restart it to release memory when I'm running Eclipse, Tomcat and Photoshop at the same time... hop

This is great news. There was always going to be some kind of security incident with people rushing to get their BTC-based sites up, and after the hype bitcoin had generated it was inevitable there would be many who thought that the bubble

Nice article. Also possibly worth mentioning that if you're raising tens of millions and hoping to exit for billions, you'll be giving away almost all your stock. If your valuation is more modest, you'll keep much more control.
