I came here to say the same thing (even worded the same way in my head). Why are people so fixated on college degrees -- even if they've already built a profitable company from scratch? Is it to prove something? If so, what?

Like the episode of Monk where an eccentric rich fellow wrote hundreds of volumes of his diary talking about his treasure. Nobody can figure out what his clues mean. Turns out he wrote them with gold ink .

His Twitter feed is worth a read too, if it's legit (I guess he's not notable enough to rate a checkmark): http://twitter.com/kenjennings "@IBMWatson, I'm-a let you finish, but homo sapiens is one of the smartest species of all time."

It's rather like people who buy a book just so they can burn it. If I'm the publisher, that's my cue to reprint as fast as possible.

It certainly is. It's very nearly the same strategy that took Sun to the dizzying heights it enjoys today.

Yes, but it's hard to judge things that you have no reference frame for. There's another story about the Grand Canyon. Apparently the first Spaniards to reach it estimated it to be a couple hundred feet deep, and thought the part of the Col

How do they know it's huge? From their point of view, it could be the size of a bird. The story goes that the Huaorani called Nate Saint's plane a "woodbee" before he landed near them. After all, it flies and it buzzes.

In my area, gas stations must tell you if they have ethanol in their fuels. Those that do, do it with tiny stickers on the pumps. Those that don't, put big signs by the road advertising their 100% gasoline. A lot of stations which sold E10

A lot depends on habits, sure. One can develop expensive or inexpensive habits. Ours were mostly inexpensive, I suppose, but I never thought of them that way. Practically nobody I knew had a brand new car, so it didn't seem unusual that we

That's just the thing: It's never pass by ref. References are passed by value . If it were pass by ref, you could make a parameter point to a different object and it would still be visible after the method had returned.

> And no, $60K is pretty tight for a family of four anywhere in the US. That's... not true. I came from a family of eight who never had more than $50k income (no health insurance), and I don't remember ever even having to think about it

Cal Tech wasn't even in the game. They were just located in Pasadena (a suburb of Los Angeles), where the game is played every year. This is similar to the way MIT has often "hacked" the annual Harvard vs. Yale game, once even planting a we
