> Just because something is on the internet doesn't give you the holly right of getting it for free. Correct. Others have the holy right to charge, and I have the holy right to try getting around it.

Oh they'll use it...I have no doubt about that. If I led this company, I'd be foolish to turn it down (without knowing anything else). I'm less sure what's going through heads of their investors.

So. This company raised $75 million less than a year ago. It just raised another $50 million for "growth" now, 10 years after it was founded...for a grand total of $213 million in venture capital. What the heck will these guys do

The Harmonia format would be pretty awesome applied to nonfiction, I think (e.g., crowd-sourced marginalia). Closest application I can think of is Fermat's Library [1]. I was initially skeptical but found Wattpad's tap stories pre

Which conservative outlets would you say are similar to Quillette? I've been reading it for a while and consider it a fair bit more thoughtful than other outlets, even if it skews conservative.

By resisting Google, which to me implies that they're instead using Firefox. That may not be true, as they may be stuck on IE or dominated by some other browser. I don't know the numbers...it was just a bad attempt at humor.

I think it's hilarious that 2 of the 3 countries hailed as bastions of freedom (by this 1 metric) include Cuba and Eritrea.

Yes but they actually ship hardware right now (laptops), just raised a round of funding, and post regular updates on tangible progress. A safer bet than most, I'd say.

I've been running Pop for about 6 months now and it's been fantastic. It's the first Linux distro that I've been able to run full-time, after trying the main Ubuntu distro for 6+ years with VMs and dual-booting. Beyond i

All my mobile devices...5 Android phones, a Kindle, and everything else I own use Micro-USB. I haven't needed anything else for the past 10 years.

All jobs that require making stuff are in manufacturing. As tempting as it is to think that software is taking over the world, humans will always live in a 4D world, and we'll always need stuff to help us live in it. Manufacturing wi

I'm trying to avoid dependence on a platform. I want this software to be sovereign...software that stands on its own and can't be strong-armed by any big company (or betrayed by a scandal/exploit).

Hey thanks! QR codes might work, but I think key files will be too unwieldy for my user base. Do you mind elaborating on the hash to word concept? I'm not sure I follow.

We're in the first round of digital media becoming a pervasive part of everyone's lives. People are just now realizing how harmful these services are & just how extensive their powers are. At the same time, there are a bunch o

What's the lesson here? I see 2 suggestions: (1) algorithm engineers try to make inputs as fair as possible, 'promoting' every political initiative perfectly fairly or (2) algorithm engineers train bots to produce output (e.g

You're ignorant for making up a narrative the commenter never put forth. Also, I think it's odd that you consider regional median and average wages to be exploitive.

I actually think the offer to read this story on your Kindle is quite clever...if they offered that to me in a pop-up before serving me a barrage of ads, I might even prefer it. And it's an honest revenue model! And it's 86 pages

I hope this becomes a trend but there should be an easy way for non-savvy users to check keys & hashes to make sure they're not duped with tainted binaries.

I know, but the UX is hobbled pretty bad IMO. There's a good chance less-savvy users are turned away altogether... Good to know. I'm planning on not signing anything for my first release, think I'll stick with that plan. Than
