I'm also dual booting OS X and Ubuntu with a shared home partition formatted as HFS+. Getting the encryption to work nicely in Linux sounded pretty easy, but I couldn't figure out how to do it in OS X. My current solution is to store anythi

I wonder how it looks in a more realistic environment (i.e. when the background isn't pitch black). Even after quite a bit of Googling I can't turn up any other photos of it It's a shame it costs $1300.

Building from source isn't necessarily a bad thing: some Linux packages have the same behavior (e.g. Portage, on which MacPorts is based). There are pros and cons to both approaches. Package management is definitely a disaster on OS X, tho

Now we know for sure why Google removed the "+" operator: it's used for the "direct connect feature." E.g. if you search for +pepsi you're redirected to Pepsi's Google+ page.

> By the way, a 2880×1800 15" panel merely (well …) has 230 PPI. Apple couldn’t even call it a Retina display. Whether a display is "retina" or not depends upon how far the display is from your eyes. I could definitely see Apple stretch

This is the point of resolution independence. Increasing resolution only shrinks graphical elements if the operating system isn't smart enough to render them using more pixels. With good resolution independence moving a higher resolution sc

That problem is inherent with posting something online. The best any service can do is make it difficult for someone to accidentally violate their friends' privacy. This, in my opinion, is where Google+ is failing: sharing makes it very eas

Only allowing the owner to share an album is a false sense of security. If someone can see your album, they could just as easily download the photos and make them public. Instead of disallowing it outright, I'd rather they make it clear tha

Since OCR was only able to parse one of the words, they have no way of checking the other (besides taking votes from a ton of submissions). Because the summation was not the word that was checked, you could enter anything. It's an interesti

If you're using a password management utility, root access to the filesystem isn't enough because all stored passwords are encrypted a password that is never stored on disk. One example of this, I believe, is Keychain using your login passw

The problem isn't that opening on mouse-up is worse , it's that it's different . After using an operating system for thousands of hours, one becomes accustom to the behavior of the standard controls. Anything that deviates from them and i

Well, that explains a lot. Every time I attempt to accomplish something on Facebook, one of two things happens: (1) the interface has changed in some way or (2) the feature is broken. Just last week, every "Load More" link was broken in Goo

Stereo vision does need two sensors and two lenses, where a micro-lens approach would only require one of each. However, the micro-lens camera would need a much larger and higher resolution sensor to produce a depth image that has the same

I don't think it is fair to lump "frequent updates," "large updates," and "background updates" into a single category: Frequent updates, if properly managed, are generally a plus: security vulnerabilities get patched before they are widely

You could probably do it, but it's not clear why it would be superior to stereo vision. Both approaches have the same pitfalls (CPU-intensive, need texture to work well) and stereo vision is largely a solved problem that works on commodity
